What is your first musical instrument?

Hello, MyLot members!
We all listen to music every day. We hear music on the radio, on our smartphones, etc.
We also had music subjects when we are still in primary school and high school.
We could also be taught by family members the musical instruments that they know.
So, what is your first musical instrument? If you do know how to play music.

My first instrument was probably the piano because we had that in the house. I pretty much taught myself to play by ear and then got so bored by the exercises I had to do when I had lessons that I soon gave those up and continued to enjoy playing by ear.
I think that I learned the violin for a while but found that it made my arm ache terribly, so gave that up too. After that I had a ukulele and soon graduated to a banjo (tuned to the same as the top four strings of a guitar) and finally a guitar.
Somewhere along the line I also taught myself to play the recorder a little and the 'penny whistle' (flageolet or Irish whistle). Later on I acquired a mandolin and now consider that (and the tenor banjo) my 'main' instrument, though I also sing and play guitar.
Some years ago I bought a kit for making a small harp and built that and learned to play it a little.
Although I do know what the notes on the stave mean, I still can't really read music!

@EfficientNinja The band I was with talked about going professional but really we all preferred to keep it as a hobby.

Wow, you have a long history of playing musical instruments! You could be a pro if you stuck with one.

The piano, like the organ are both very hard to learn. It's much easier when we are younger.

Have you tried the guitar? It could be easier to learn it for you.

Clarinet here. Everyone in band class that was too poor for a "real" instrument got stuck with one of those. Our first song can't remember the name, but was something to do with a whippoorwill bird. Unfortunately the band teacher was an angry, stuck up bleepbloop so I didn't stay in her class for long

@EfficientNinja That's what my band teacher said. She was letting us temp borrow them until the end of the month at which she expected us to bring a "real" instrument to her class. She could have been referring to the quality of the particular clarinets

I don't know what you meant by "real" instrument because Clarinet is a valid musical instrument.

@cupkitties It could be. It’s too bad she isn’t a good teacher and you have to leave the class.

Would you like to learn one now? Or are you too busy now?

It was a flute if I am not mistaken. I still know how but I forgot all the notes.

@mlgen1037 Maybe the difficulty in learning differs for every person. I found guitar quite easy.

I didn't play a musical instrument in high school, but I learned the flute in elementary school, the recorder and organ in college. I don't remember a thing I learned from either, because I just never kept up with it. I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar. Music can be so relaxing and fun at the same time. What musical instruments do you play?

Agreed! I find music relaxing too! Especially if I play the music myself. I know how to play the guitar.

I also want to learn how to play the piano. However, I only have an organ here in our house.

I'm in the same boat. My guitar is accumulating dust because I haven't played it for a long time. I try to monetize my time instead of playing it.

You could try other musical instruments. You may find others easier to learn.

My first instrument was definitely the piano. We had one in the house growing up, and I would figure out tunes by ear from time to time and even taught myself some songs out of some of my mom's old piano books (she had taken lessons very briefly). I myself took lessons for a while, and although I had the talent for it (or so I was told), I lost interest very quickly and eventually quit because I was busy with school and dance. Several times I have tried to pick it back up but was just too overwhelmed with other commitments to make it work.
It turns out I come from a whole history of very talented piano players on both sides of my family. My (paternal) great-great-great grandfather in particular was a music merchant in New Orleans (after being a well known church organist in the area) and had one of the largest piano showrooms in the world. By all accounts, his whole family played beautifully. My maternal grandmother was also a brilliant pianist from what I'm told.
I would love to pick it back up again but I don't think I am ready to commit to formal lessons right now. I do sit down and practice various pieces I've played in the past whenever I can though.

I attempted to learn the guitar. At the time, I just did not take to it as much as I did baseball, lol.
