People Give Away Their Privacy at Starbucks

Many of us worry about having our identities hacked when we use our computers or cell phones. However, this morning, while having coffee with a friend, a man who was sitting at the next table completely gave away a great deal of personal information about himself. We ended up learning far more than we wanted to about his personal life.
There he was, sitting in Starbucks, talking loudly on his cell phone, and shopping for a new health insurance policy. As a result, he gave the agent on the phone (and anyone in Starbucks who was interested) the following information:
Name
Address
Phone numbers
Age of both him and his wife
Occupation (Financial Advisor)
Income (yes, out there for everyone to know)
Current monthly insurance premiums
Current insurance carrier
Why he wanted to change insurance
When he wanted to change insurance (ASAP)
His health history (recent cataract surgery and he is on cholesterol medicine)
His wife's medical history (hip replacement surgery five years ago; she's doing fine)
He was still on the phone and talking loudly when my friend and I left. If we had stayed long enough, we would probably have gotten his Social Security number and other information, too!
I cannot believe that anyone would announce all these things loudly at Starbucks. If he gets his identity stolen, he will probably blame some foreign hacker, not his own carelessness!
Some people are just hopeless!

@LadyDuck - Yes, they are rude. Not only are they loud and obnoxious, but they have a tendency to disturb other patrons in these cafes. However, if you say anything to them, you only make matters worse.

@LadyDuck - Like your husband, this man's conversation was making me crazy, too. I could not believe it. I agree they should make these calls from home.

@amadeo - Yes, he wanted to be heard! He's just lucky that I wasn't a criminal. I hope there were no criminals sitting at other tables! LOL

Some people don't seem to have a clue. Then there are others who get their privacy violated in ways they have no reason to suspect. Did you see what happened with amazon's Echo? This is kind of scary. I'm glad I never got one.

@DeborahDiane I just read a post today from a tech magazine on how one can prevent this from occurring, but you have to call Amazon support to change a setting that you can't change by yourself.

@bagarad - I'm glad I do not have one of those devices. My sister does. I hope she calls Amazon and gets her settings changed!

I hear people all the time at Starbucks just blabbing out their private information without a thought or care in the world! It's no fun having your identity stolen, so these people will learn soon enough to watch their private information like a hawk!

@moffittjc - You can say that, again! I agree that far too many people have absolutely no common sense, and they they complain when they have problems.

@just4him - I agree! If there was some reason not to do it at home, he should have made the call from his car. I could not believe he was sharing all this information for everyone to hear!

@just4him - I agree. This man was definitely not thinking! Very often, people do dangerous things without thinking.

That was not very bright of him, not the kind of conversation you hold in a public place.

@BelleStarr - This man said he was an investment advisor. I could not help but wonder if he talks about his clients on the phone when he is in Starbucks. I would not want him handling my money!

I can't understand this type of people. It is an issue that he should deal with at home. It is not a topic to discuss on phone at a Starbucks.

@DeborahDiane Great observation! Unfortunately a lot of people do not pay attention to their surroundings. We have so many things to do nowadays and so little time to do it that often time we're giving out personal information in public settings just to save time. Also you have those attention seekers who are loud on purpose just to have people paying attention to them.

@Ladybug8608 - Ahh! You are very smart. I agree he may have been loud to attract attention. However, if he ends up with his identity stolen, it will certainly be the wrong type of attention! LOL
