How do you deal with somebody who is negative all the time?

Having faced death almost a year ago I don't get a negative attitude. Life is so precious and I have a very low tolerance to people who don't appreciate life. I believe in living life to the fullest and not looking back. I have very low tolerance for people who always complain. I am not the person I once was. It is difficult at times because I have changed so much in a year.

I have dealt with such a person, a relative by marriage, for 49 years and only recently learned how to deal with her. Most negative people are that way because they don't know how to express themselves. Become a sounding board for them and teach them to express themselves! For instance, she was complaining about her neighbor--she's so stuck up, she doesn't talk much and barely says hello. So I said back--your feelings are hurt because she's reclusive and you'd like her to be friendlier. To which she said yes, she never thought of it that way before, maybe she's shy. Before that we would snipe back and forth, me taking offense at her criticizing her neighbor and her feelings being hurt because I defended the neighbor. So instead, I repeated what she said but in a different way and discovered that she didn't mean to criticize but could not describe her own feelings. Am I making sense? We have a whole new relationship, one that I enjoy, for the first time in decades. And she is learning to express herself more clearlyl and is not arguing as much with people.

I know many that complain about every little ache and pain. They say that their lives suck. Well, I won't tolerate it. One of my client's, who was wheelchair bound, reliant on others to bathe her, get her meals, dress her, get her in and out of bed, and change her soiled briefs, was one that never complained. Everyday she woke feeling blessed to be able to live another day. When it rained, she embraced the rain, when it snowed she did the same. When the sun shined she would wheel herself to the sunniest window and bask in the sunshine. She was a blessing to me. Others could learn from her and I share her story with those who complain. Don't know if they take anything away from it, but I tell them to embrace life. It is a gift.

I have less and less tolerance to people who complain all the time. We all have our problems, there is no reason to annoy the others. I now try to avoid them.

There are a lot of negative persons, some are always complaining about their health, how miserable their lives are and so on. Right now I try to avoid those persons as they end IP putting me down too.

@Happy2BeMe we already have to deal with our own problems, we don't need others to put some more over our shoulders.

yes, i think at my age now, I have met almost all kind of people. and a nega is one of them. I just treat them like fart, *excuse me for my term* . I compared them to such because truly I will know their presence but eventually they will just vanished.

I've rid myself of oddballs and copycats years ago. I surround myself with people who are happy, upbeat, non complainers, and not negative. Those are burdensome and boring. No need and no room in my life for them.

At first, I always try to spread a little of my positive energy onto them. If they resist (which they usually do) - I walk.

Keep your distance, keep the love, but decrease the amount of time you spend with them. It's harder to do with family members, but it is important to surround yourself with positive people.

I really like and appreciate your positive attitude. Thank you for sharing it. I sincerely hope that you get well and stay well. Just like you, I have not time or tolerance for negative, complaining people. I have to stay as far away from them as possible. That's not to say that I won't be around to give support and a listening ear. People need to be there for each other, it's what we should all do. However, when it comes to being negative and staying negative, no way can I tolerate that. I know of an individual who had to have a tooth pulled a few years back. One tooth. It was boo hoo hiss, feel sorry for me, woa is me - cry, cry, cry. Two of my cats had to have dental surgery - one had his back teeth removed and the other little baby had two surgeries and now has has not teeth at all. Both kitties are as happy, healthy and appreciative of life as can be. What a pleasure it is to be around that kind of enthusiasm. One of the many statements that I make to whoever may be in earshot is this: And now you wonder why I love my pets so much!

It is hard for some people to see the positive side of life. Pointing out the good sides might help..but as someone who defintely has their negative moments..they will find something wrong with that too! There is probably not much you can do really..other than choose not to be around them, or to say you prefer positivity. I have a friend who is always telling me horror stories from the news..I just tell him I don't want to hear it..but then I am not always diplomatic..
