I Ruined My Laptop!!!!

Everything was going good this morning. Took my daughter to the orthodontist to get her appliance removed and the rest of her braces put on and then took both of them to school. I came home, fixed my coffee, and my breakfast after which it was time to start my online work. I was browsing through my emails, checking for anything important, completed a task on Mturk, and was going to start a discussion here at myLot. I suddenly started getting sleepy and the next thing I knew I woke up with a pain in my neck from the position it was in and my coffee cup was tipped to the side spilling the contents of the mostly empty cup onto my laptop's keyboard. Yep, it is fried now! I tried several times to get the keyboard to work and it won't. So now that means I have to get a new one which I have needed for awhile but was waiting until I could save up some money. Well today after picking my children up from school, I will be stopping and getting a new laptop. I could use my desktop but it really isn't convenient and it is slow due to its age. I still can't believe I did this. I didn't even realize I still had the cup in my hand when I was falling asleep. I swear every time I sit in my chair I fall asleep like a narcoleptic. I am afraid it is too late to give you the trick, because the first thing to do when you drop a cup on a keyboard is to switch the computer off and to unplug it if it is plugged to avoid more damages. But you can try, there is a little hope. I suppose you have already cleaned the coffee on the keyboard, the next move is to dry it. 2 methods : -- with a hair dryer, not too close of the keyboard. You have to do pauses every 2 or 3 mn and to dry all the keyboard, not only the part where you dropped the coffee ; -- or with rice. It is the safest method if rice cannot go under the the keys of the keyboard which is usually the case for a laptop. Put a layer of rice in a dish larger than the laptop, open the laptop and put the keyboard in order to touch or be very close of the rice. Wait at least 3 days before switching the laptop on. I have personally tried the rice method and it worked for me.

@morgoodie Maybe the keyboard will also need to be cleaned. Do not use it during several days until it has dried, there are short circuits inside and they may damage the laptop definitely if it is not already done.

Thank you for the great tips. I am not sure if drying it will make it work again since the coffee had flavored creamer in it so I think it will be quite sticky. I did clean up the coffee from the top of the keyboard but the keys wouldn't type when I used them. Things were going wonky with the screen as well. I will give it a few days before I turn it on again. My kids are wanting to use it, but I don't know if that is going to happen.

@topffer I will wait a while before I turn it on to see if it is beyond my help. I am hoping it won't be too bad and my kids can use it for whatever they want to do with it. Thank you.

I sometimes start to fall asleep in the car, or while watching tv, but never with anything in hand or ever actually get to sleep. Sorry you had to buy a new laptop.

Thanks. I have never fallen asleep with anything in my hand before. I must have been overly tired since I slept terribly last night. I needed a new laptop anyway as the one I ruined was old. I just wanted to wait a bit longer.

Thank you. I was able to get a new laptop today. I am breaking it in right now. Of course, this time I won't hold my coffee in my hand anymore in case I accidentally fall asleep.

Nothing like this has happened to me yet and thank god for that. I dont have money to even think about buying something new. Hopefully you wont have to spend to much money to get a laptop and get things back up and running again and you dont have to be on your desktop. I prefer to use a desktop computer to be on mylot and alot of other websites as well. I usually only do my paid websites while im at work.

Yeah, I don't really have the money for it right now either, but I use my laptop to make money online. Sitting at my makeshift desk to work on my desktop isn't really comfortable for me especially for the time I spend online. I should be able to get a decent enough one for not much money. I don't need anything special since I just use it for the internet and streaming Netflix. I am glad you haven't had to experience anything like this before.

@lologirl2021 I use my phone and iPad sometimes. Not too often anymore since I started working an offline job. I had to cut back quite a bit on my online work because of it.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Fortunately, I can't seem to fall asleep in a computer chair. But I am a bit dizzy today while I'm working.

I probably wouldn't fall asleep if I was in a computer chair but since I work on my laptop while sitting in my recliner it makes it a little bit easier to fall asleep. I am sorry that you are feeling dizzy while you are working. I hope you stop feeling that way soon. Take care!

Fortunately, I was in need of a new laptop anyway. It was about 6 years old and the battery no longer worked and it heated up so bad sometimes to the point it would just shut itself down. I fixed it by buying a new laptop today. Not really a good time but what can you do, right?

Oh no! Can you get it repaired? My granddaughter broke her laptop screen recently and I got that repaired. It might be cheaper than getting a new one.

@sprite1950 Yeah they are. I didn't get a fancy one just the basic one but it is still nice. It doesn't get hot like the old one did and it is a little bit faster. My other one was about 6 years old. My desktop is 7 years old I believe, but I don't really use it. I let the kids use it. Of course, my son plays on it more than my daughter does.

That happened with me 2 years ago and I had to have the keyboard changed. There is no other way your laptop will work normally unless you do it.

@morgoodie it takes few minutes to have the keyboard replaced. In my case I took one from the local market that cost me $12 only.

I am glad I am not the only one. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me. I look into how much it will cost to repair it and then my kids will be able to use it. Until then, I will just enjoy my new laptop and keep working online to save the money up for the repairs if it is reasonable.

@suni51 I don't trust myself to fix it. I don't know what I am doing so I would have to take it somewhere but I can't think that it would cost a whole lot if that is all they will have to do to it to make it work again. I am glad that you were able to fix yours for cheap.
