Is pet adoption over priced?

I took in a stray cat some months back. The cat is unhappy being indoors but my children are already attached to him so I suggested we adopt a cat from our local ASPCA. I called to inquire on the cost and they $125.00 for kittens and $30-$40 for cats a year and older. In my opinion that is expensive especially the price for kittens. What are your thoughts/comments

Before putting animals up for adoption the SPCA spays and neuters them, gives them their shots and ensures the overall health of the animal. That is what you are paying for. They come with the papers that prove their spay and/or neuter and the shots given.
A very cheap price for an animal as opposed to what it would cost if you had to get them spayed/neutered and immunized yourself.

@Ladybug8608 You misunderstood my tone. I wasn't being mean or trying to insult your intelligence. You asked a question, I (hopefully) gave an informative answer.

The cat keeps escaping so you're saying every time the cat escapes I should hunt him down and drag him back into my house where he doesn't want to be and meows and cry to get out all night that's the solution. Sounds like cruelty to me.

Why would you do a senseless thing like adopt another cat when you already have one. Just be patient or talk to a vet about you need to do to make the cat more comfortable inside.

@NJChicaa I mean that's stupid. If you have a pet and want to abandon it to in essence get a better model you clearly don't care for the pet.

@Ladybug8608 There is a misunderstanding between you. Many of us are not native English speakers and are from different cultures, so it may happen. I do not think that @AKRao24 wanted to be mean or insulting, it is not in his nature.

That's less than what they cost here I think.
If the cat wants out, it'd probably be best to let them out. Whether your kids are attached or not. But obviously it's your choice.

I think it's not. As others have mentioned these places neuter them and give them injections and other medical stuff before they're adopted out. Many of these places are also running on donations so they need another sort of income. If you look at prices of breeders and other non- adoption places, the prices adoption centres charge are quite reasonable
