It just means sleeping very peacefully or deep sleep. You aren't mistaken in saying that children do not sleep through like this saying makes it out to be but that is a very literal take to that phrase.

@asswclown It's a figurative speech - you cannot take them literally, you only have to understand its usage.

@asswclown Sleeping like a child is an idiomatic expression. They may not sleep soundly but if you will understand the context, then you will understand what I mean.

I understand what you mean that most Children don’t sleep peacefully all night. But I think it means without any stress or worries as they don’t have the stress adults have.
