Would you do a job you hated?

Would you take a job you didn't like if the money was good. If you knew it was something you definitely would not like to do but got offered it what would you say? I have taken jobs I wasn't sure I would like and sometimes it worked out but other times I knew I would not be able to stick it even though I was well paid. I even left a well paid job and took on one I liked for less money. Is money really important if it means you spend a large proportion of your life doing something you hate or would you do it for the sake of a better quality of life?

We have only 1 life. I did a few alimentary jobs when I was a student and decided that I would never do that again. Doing a job that I like is more important than earning a lot of money with a job that I would hate. I will not be buried with my money.

Absolutely, the saying "you can't take it with you" is very true but I guess you need enough to survive on especially if you have to support a family.

@sprite1950 I never had to complain, I always managed to survive with jobs I liked, and they made me happy.

Knowing me, I'd take the money and run so to speak. Sock away as much as I can and do it for as long as I could stand it, but bank as much as I can in the meantime.

That's a good idea . I was in a job I hated once but I didn't last long because it made me so unhappy. I really didn't care about the money and got another for less;

@porwest A blessing in disguise. Did you get something better that you liked after?

@sprite1950 Sometimes being happy is better. I do know when I left Coke I worked for a corrugated box making company, and while the pay there was good I said from day one as soon as something better comes along I am out. Luckily the company went bankrupt and five months later they laid me off, so I was forced to seek something else.

I have had to do jobs that I did not like but not hate altogether. Cleaning in Hotels can be very hard work and I have supported injuries from it over time. It gave us money to keep our smal baby son and that the money was something I did not hate rather had to endure all the hard tough stuff that went with it for a time yes.

@sprite1950 I have to tell you that cleaning in Hotels is not something very nice at all and very hard work as you have to be quite fit to clean 21 bedrooms a day from top to bottom and the bathrooms included and look after your own place and a little boy on top. The worst part was cleaning the staff toilets I can still remember that even now. I used to get home and go to sleep from exhaustion. You have to think about the cleaning I used to do as you had the boss behind you to go and make you clean it again afterwards if not done according to her standard yuk. This was in England and in Spain they are slave drivers much worse than in Great Britain I know because I had to clean over there as well. But all i all I made some great friends and that is the best bit of memory I have..

@lovinangelsinstead21 My daughter cleaned in a travel lodge and she said that people had the most disgusting habits and sometimes left the rooms in a terrible state. Having to do the duvet covers would be enough to put me off

I did plenty of cleaning jobs in my time. They were at least something you could do and not have to worry about. I always hated jobs with a lot of responsibility that you would think about when you got home.

I am not sure I could do a job that I really dislike. I cannot say I really liked what I did all my life, but I worked with my husband, not a job I would have chosen, but I was happy to help.

@sprite1950 I hate the numbers, I would have never decided to do a financial business if I had the choice. Following my husband was different.

@Hannihar Yes sometimes I think a change is good for us. What seems good at the beginning changes and becomes tedious over time.

@sprite1950 Yes, there were a couple of jobs I liked but they closed. I liked when I started my small business and found a place to sell but then after years of doing it and many changes at the place I no longer like it so wanted to sell my things and do something else.

Hmmm, I am not really sure. I have worked at a job that I didn't really enjoy and it wasn't fun. I didn't want to get up and go to work. I dreaded it daily. It wasn't hard work or anything like that. I think I was just burned out and I had to work with the public. I stayed for so long because I had a family to support and it had benefits. Maybe I would take the job and save up as much money as I could so that I could get out of debt then find something that I really liked.

@morgoodie Yes having to start again is stressful for anyone so I can imagine it's worse if you have anxiety problems. I find getting to know new people can be hard as not everyone is accepting and friendly.

Luckily I was always able to find another job but there was a time when I was very young and was being sexually harassed. I was scared to go to work so I left that one pretty quickly. I was only 17 then and lived at home. I got another job right after as unemployment wasn't too bad then.

@sprite1950 I don't blame you for leaving that job. I probably should have changed jobs, but I don't like change at all. It causes me some serious anxiety.

Honestly, I don't know if I could do it. It would be really worth it, as I would be dreading to go in to work all the time. It'd be better if I at least liked it.

@minx267 I have been in jobs where I was treated as an outsider and felt very uncomfortable. I think it's mean of people to treat a newcomer that way. It's hard enough learning a new job.

@sprite1950 When you are not happy in life doing what you don't want to... Does that money make any sense? To me it's not. I think we can earn better life by doing what we love as it opens many doors to excel in it.

I stayed on jobs with lower earnings without trying for another with better prospects. If I like the work environment, I tend to stay and I have no regrets. I work to live and not live to work; so no jobs just for the money - siva
