We’re holidaying in Tasmania. It’s winter here but at least there are fewer tourists. It’s been a bit colder than we’re used to but yesterday was lovely and sunny. On Tuesday we left Latrobe in the rain and paddled off towards Scottsdale. I’d forgotten how rugged parts of Tasmania are and we went up and up and up until we were in the clouds then we switched back down and down before encountering more hills And so it went on all day. It was good that we were driving all day and not too fussed about sight-seeing.
We were going to free-camp but took a wrong turn and nearly got ourselves stuck again. The caravan and car as a unit is quite long and it can be difficult to find somewhere to turn around if you need to. However with a bit of back and forthing, we turned around and went back to St Helen’s for the night where we free-camped on a sporting oval.
Wednesday dawned bright and sunny and we enjoyed a walk on the pier with its colourful fishing-boats. Many are crayfish boats and one of the guys said that all the crayfish caught in Australia goes to China. I kept hearing ‘plops’ and worked out the sound was coming from sea-birds plunging straight into the water after fish. They weren’t seagulls but some other bird.
We drove on to Coles Bay and have a powered site for two nights. We can charge up all our batteries, I’ve done some laundry and we’ve had a nice walk along the beach. There are some magnificent hills here which Vince is trying to photograph and if the planets converge, he’ll get a plane flight over Wineglass Bay. We’ll drive out that way too and climb to a vantage point.
Tomorrow we drive to Hobart and will catch up with a friend that used to work with Vince.
