the most devastating horror film of the year!

Except, it's not.
Terrifying! said some reviews.
But it's not.
I am of course talking about Hereditary, the most anticipated horror film for a long time.
I was disappointed. This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the film, because I did. But it wasn't terrifying. It wasn't devastatingly horrific. It was a story of a family already in grief, who then faced more heartache following the 'accidental' death of someone else in the family. If the supernatural aspects {none of which were ever fully explored or explained} were removed, it would simply be a tale of mental health, with strands of narcissism, emotional abuse, grief, guilt and blame. I would probably have enjoyed that more.
The actors were brilliant, creating likeable and complex characters. I actually felt their pain and sadness. The location was beautiful; I want to visit. I asked Google and he says it was filmed in Utah. Who knew Utah was so stunning? Not l.
As a film it isn't particularly original. It's all a bit Rosemary's Baby meets Paranormal Activity meets The Omen. However, it's an interesting concept, and I'd definitely pop along to see a sequel, or even a prequel.
But that's just my take on the film. You probably need to see it for yourself.

Hi Elizabeth. I will take a look on this film. Maybe Conjuring is scarier?

@mlgen1037 I heard about that. Apparently they've made it so that it ignores everything that happened in the other films made after the original. That's what Husband told me, but he's often wrong. Not that he would admit to that!

It's probably on a par. I don't generally find supernatural and paranormal horror to be scary, perhaps because I don't believe in that kind of stuff. Halloween is the scariest film I've ever seen.

I find that Hollywood really sensationalizes a film using all the best cuts of the movie for it's trailer. It's very rarely exactly as you would expect it to be. Whether that be our own fault (high expectations) or that of the industry whose to say.
I rarely watch movies in the theaters anymore. I'll wait until I can rent them.

I find it quite difficult to watch films at home as there's too many distractions. Some films are made to be seen on the big screen.

@Poppylicious We have a big (not sure how many inches) 4K TV. It's a good experience for movies minus the sound system that the theater has.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We have the 4K TV and the sound system, but I still have too many distractions at home! However, the football match between England and Tunisia last night did look pretty amazing on it!

You'd be fine. It has a couple of intense moments, but I don't think it was that scary.

@Poppylicious I was watching the trailer, I see a young girl making figurine to put in a doll house and I remember that many years ago a user in Bubblews wrote a story like this. I have to watch this movie.

@Poppylicious I think it is fine to be scared once in a while. I haven't checked it. I will do it later.

Take your cushion to hide behind! Or don't, because you probably won't need it.

It was a good film. Just not as scary as it was hyped up to be.
