Don't know when you should tip? I have come up with an easy to remember rule by the stating the only time you don't have to tip. The one and only reason you can forgo tipping the housekeeper is when you aren't staying at a hotel. That's it, they only one. For all others, as long as you are staying in a hotel and getting service-TIP!
"But what if I die in the middle of the night while staying at a hotel?"
If you believe there is a possibility of your expiring before housekeeping comes around leave the tip on the dresser the night before and make it a good one. A really good tip.

I've worked as a housekeeper in a hotel but not everyone tips. Those who do tip are usually the ones who stay for a few days then tip when they leave.

I currently work at a hotel as a housekeeper. I've found the neater ones tend to leave tips more than the messy guests. While there's always an exception to the rule, you can pretty much tell who will leave a tip and who won't.

@irishidid That too. The messy ones have no respect for the property of others, let alone for those who have to clean up after them.

I really didn't know you tipped the housekeeper in a hotel. This is new info for me. I'll remember that the next time I travel.

If you're getting really good service, then by all means, we should tip to show our gratitude. But I agree with you, if you don't stay in a hotel, then you can tip or not if it's your preference. I think there are Tip Calculator Apps around so it might be a good idea to tip reasonably, as well. (hehe) But if you're loaded and feeling generous, then tip as much as you want. But if not, maybe a gum would suffice?

NEVER and I mean NEVER leave food as a tip!!! I've gotten anywhere from $1.00 to $20.00.

@irishidid (Haha) I know, I just got the idea from Home Alone 2 where Kevin - the Protagonist gave a gum as a tip. It was hilarious.

I NEVER tip unless I have the room tossed. If I don't have the room tossed, which I rarely do since I don't want the maids in my room, I don't tip. A clean room is part of my charge in my opinion. NOTHING against the hard work the maids do. That being said, I always try to keep my room in a reasonable condition when I leave. I travel ALL THE TIME for business and stay in hotels about 6 nights a month.

If you aren't having service you don't have to tip. You should when you're checking out. I find tips more often in the cleaner room than the really messy one.

@irishidid Stands to reason. The people who keep the room cleaner are probably more considerate across the board.
