Would you buy food off of a website?

I don't mean brand name foods that are mass produced. I am talking about foods that are made by individuals and sold. Things like jams, jellies, honey and cakes. I've bought honey straws off of etsy from a seller in the eastern part of my state. Those were delicious, different flavors that were good as a sweet snack. I've considered buying pumpkin butter or pecan preserves from sellers on etsy as well. I like to buy things homemade and am not too bothered by buying things like that on etsy. I've seen cakes advertised on etsy as well but I'm a little more weary of those. I figure they would dry out before they got to me and would defeat the purpose of having them. I don't get the opportunity to go to flea markets, festivals and farmer's markets often. When I do buy online I try to buy from sellers in my state or those surrounding it. Do you buy homemade foods online?

I have never bought homemade food online. I would be afraid that it would be dry when it arrives, but I guess that depends on the type of food. Some of the farms in our area sell homemade food. I prefer to buy from them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum What is a latino store? What do they sell? There are many farms in our area. They sell fruit and vegetables and many other things. We pass them when we drive from our village to the nearest town and we like to have a look at the things they are selling.

@Porcospino A Latino store is where candies, sauce mixes, spreads etc that are imported from Mexico, Veneuzeula, Spain etc are sold. I think it's mostly things from Mexico though. They also sell things like candles with Saints on them. It's been awhile since I've been in one of those stores because I don't speak Spanish and always went with a friend who did. I live in a suburb but there is one farm not far from us. It's a Horse Farm though and I'm not even sure if it's being used as such. It used to be years ago. I did find out that the farmer's market closer to me (in the next town over) is open on Saturdays. I will have to go one day when I have the chance.

I wouldn't buy cakes or anything like that because of it possibly drying out. It's funny you should mention dry foods because it made me think of a place here. I haven't been to this place in many years. It's a latino store but with a bakery at the back. Most of the sweet breads were very dry but apparently that is the norm. I think they must have had breads that had been there for days. Apparently there is a farmer's market closer to me but I've never been. I need to find out where it is and go. The other farmer's market (that I know of) is downtown and that's a bit of a nightmare to get to.

I don't really order food online, but I probably would especially if it was someone local. I don't usually get to the farmer's market since I am usually working on the days that it is open.

My aunt told me about a farmer's market in her town. She lives only ten minutes (less) down the road and I had no idea they held a farmer's market. I found out what days it's on and so I hope to go sometime soon. I'll have to save up a few bucks before I can go though.

@morgoodie I like that you are supporting the farmers and small family farms as well. There are a few places that will send you vegetables and fruits to your door. When I have more money I might consider those but only if they are coming from a farm and not a big corp.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Farmer's markets are really nice. You can find so much good food and other stuff there. I like to look around to find the best deals.

I might try something if it looks good or I have heard good things. If I get good service and the product is good then I will order more from them in the future.

@ScribbledAdNauseum ......That is good. Reviews are so important. I have heard where they are staged though.

@celticeagle I use a site called microworkers and there are people who ask for reviews and people get paid for doing them. I don't see it happening on etsy though as you have to have bought the product before you can review it.

I plan to order more honey from the guy I ordered from last year. I do look at the reviews and I won't buy from any seller that hasn't been reviewed within the past two months.

I've had some good jams and jellies that were homemade (recommended by friends). I've also eaten a jelly that I bought at a festival. I went back the next year to buy more but the lady wasn't at the festival that year. I was disappointed and I don't know how to get in contact with her to order more.

I have never bought any homemade food but I’m not against it either. I make homemade cleaning products but I have not decided if I wanted to sell online.

I have started making stuff as well. I made one cleaning product, I've made my own bath wash and I've also made my own body powder. When I have a little more money I plan to make my own lotions.

@MochaGoddess That would be nice, thank you. Have you gone to youtube? There are plenty of videos for healthy remedies and help with things like eczema. I have a for of psoriasis. It only appears when I am really stressed.

@ScribbledAdNauseum my family suffers from exzema so I have made lotions that works great. I've made body wash, cleaning products, laundry soap that works better than tide in my personal opinion, carpet powder and a several other things. I find it therapeutic and I feel that it's the better option. I would love to try out your lotions when you make them.

Would you ever eat food that wasn't made by a restaurant or mass produced? Something that was homemade by someone you may not personally know?

I can understand that. I am not really talking about meals though. I'm talking more about things like jams, jellies, honey and baked goods. Things like cakes, pies and breads. Would you still not buy from an individual who was selling these?

I don't think there is much difference either. Except that you are supporting a small business when you buy that way.

I would not buy home / handmade food online . I do trust in humanity most of the time , but sorry, these days you can't even walk a sidewalk safely without risk...

Maybe I am a fool or just trust too much. There are some foods I wouldn't buy online, and some people I wouldn't trust, but I use my instincts. I also don't buy from people who have bad reviews or no reviews for several months.

@Luap1050 I can understand being skeptical. You are right in saying you just can't trust people anymore. People have no respect or common decency anymore, or they are seriously lacking of it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I guess if there are reviews where you buy that would create trust - maybe....lol

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes. I don't buy homemade. Do you trust people who made the cakes and other food? In our country we can't trust those people. Many got sick because they ate such food.

I check reviews before I purchase any homemade foods. I know it's just as easy for reviews to be "bought" but I feel as if it's less likely via websites like etsy.

Mostly no, unless the outfit has an impeccable operation and can show some standards of operation. People need to be aware of proper sanitation, and other factors when it comes to food. People can otherwise become very sick.

This is true. I know I've seen enough about bad sanitation restaurant wise. I have bought honey online and I have had jams from a seller at a festival.
