Making eyes ... Tie dyes and galaxies too

Here's where I've been lately, My Lot. Making eyes! Galaxies and tie-dyes too. These are glass gems that I paint with the fun designs and I'm so hooked on it. I sit down, meaning only to do one or two, or start/finish some (some of them take 2-4 steps to complete, layers of paint taking drying time in between) - and then, there I am hours later. So far I've made some for family, friends, myself, made some ahead for gifts - I'm even thinking on selling them. But that's where I get stuck. When they are all done the big ones will be necklaces and the small ones (not pictured) will be earrings. I was thinking to sell them online, and maybe in art galleries etc. I have no idea what to charge. I do not have much invested in each one. (less than $1 each one) What do you think would be fair? I was thinking anywhere from $7 to $12 x necklace. Depending on how many fees are taken out. Though I am reminded that at various site jewelry can be dirt cheap, too.... $4 - $6 for earrings (not pictured).... I don't know. Do you think magnets would be cool? Pins? Do you paint? ** Note added for technicality: Please note - I am not attempting to sell these from this posting - they are not even a finished product yet. I am just gauging people's interest and opinions ** Thanks! Photo: Mine

@Ronrybs I've wanted to try water color -- maybe you'd get along with another medium like acrylics ?

Those look gorgeous and I'm sure they will look great once made into jewelry, too. I also think magnets would be a hot seller, too. I've love to see a ring as well. Charge whatever you think is fair for your labor.

Thanks! I'm really impressed with how they're turning out. Ring is a good idea - there must be ring blanks out there.... ah, the fun part (painting) goes quick, really quick - save for dry time in between coats. Though there is time in the tedious - gluing on bails, stringing on rope cords, etc hmmmm…. food for thought. Thanks

@DianneN Thanks! I'm so addicted to the painting process - I'm now doing "galaxies" of a different type, looks like space. Though my entire place smells like paint now. lol

When you're determining your price to sell, don't forget to factor in your time it takes to make them. You will need to determine how much "hourly wage" you feel your time is worth, and then also factor that into the price. Good luck to you if you decided to start selling.

@FayeHazel But if it's a hobby you enjoy doing, then it won't seem like a bunch of tedious time or work making them!

@moffittjc True - I love the painting. In fact - I think I have a little bit of a problem by now lol. Though the other part (putting on findings to make them into something wearable) is boring and tedious. Bah humbug

Thank you, that was actually really helpful. The fun part (painting) goes quick, real quick. Though the tedious stuff (gluing on bails to make em into pendants, strings rope cords on 'em) is going to take more time....

They're beautiful. I wouldn't know about pricing. I would do research to find out what the average price would be for them.

Good thought, I was happy to see prices a bit higher than I had thought they would be, so it should be fine to charge what I was thinking

This is just my uneducated guess on what would sell well, and I would say four dollars for a pin, and six for earrings. But if you have patience I'd add two dollars to each of my suggested prices. You did such a good job.

That's a good idea, actually earrings are harder and more time comsumptive so I agree with more for them :-) Thank yoU!

Don't make them too cheap as people won't think they are a quality item. I think what you are suggesting is about right.

@FayeHazel Faye, they are very pretty. Can we see when you make the necklaces and earrings how they look? I am not good at painting. You should charge what you think is fair and best for you to make some like of profit for them if you sell them.

Oh sure :-) Here I'm wearing one :-) Thanks.... right now I'm leaning around $11 -- enough so people know they're quality, but not too much to not be affordable ....

Not sure what you might charge. But you could always start with a price and see if the market is willing to bear it. If the sales happen too fast you know your price is too low. Raise it and see what you get.

Good thought there... Im also thinking on asking people, friends, what they would pay for such a thing.... it's so difficult to know. :-)

@FayeHazel You could settle for a simple margin desire. Take your cost and decide how much to mark it up...say 35% or so...there's your price.
