The Fabulous Carson Mansion in Eureka, California

One of the more interesting buildings we saw on our trip to Eureka, California was the incredible Carson Mansion. It is so unique, that it even has it's own Wikipedia page. Here is just a brief quote from Wikipedia about the place:
"The house is a mix of every major style of Victorian architecture, including but not limited to: Eastlake, Italianate, Queen Anne (primary), and Stick. One nationally known architectural historian described the house as "a baronial castle in Redwood..." and stated further that "The illusion of grandeur in the house is heightened by the play on scale, the use of fanciful detail and the handling of mass as separate volumes, topped by a lively roofscape." The style of the house has been described as "eclectic" and "peculiarly American." Unlike most other houses dating from the period, this property always has been maintained, and is in nearly the same condition as when it was built."
We we took our harbor cruise, our guide told us that it is the most elaborate Victorian home in Eureka and is one of the most photographed places in town. It is no longer a residence, however; it is now a private club.
Once I saw it, of course, I had to take the above picture.
If you want to learn more about the Carson Mansion, check out the Wikipedia article which goes into great detail about the man who built it, the wood which was used and the history of the mansion.
Personally, I love these old homes which were lovingly designed and built by craftsmen with great attention to detail.

I love old Victorian homes. I'm glad they were built so well back then, so that even today many are still standing. Thankfully, many people have put lots of time and effort into restoring these beautiful homes to their original splendor and glory. I would love to own a house like that!

@DeborahDiane Not only would it be plastic, but they would charge you an arm and a leg to do it.

@DeborahDiane I would love to have a house like that! I love the old houses where they paid so much attention to details. I hate how everything is fake in today's houses.

@moffittjc - Yes, I was thinking the same thing. If you wanted some of that trim on a house today, they would glue on some plastic molding. It is sad.

What a great looking old place that is. I have seen some similar in Portland and in Astoria. That reminds me, if you like history, one of the best I have read is the book "Astoria."
Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire: A Story of Wealth, Ambition, and Survival [Peter Stark] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. In the tradition of The Lost City of Z and Skeletons in the Zaha

@JamesHxstatic - I will have to read that book, too. It is fascinating to learn more about our founding fathers. My husband and I really enjoyed the musical, "Hamilton," but we read all the song lyrics before we went so we understood what was going on.

@JamesHxstatic - That sounds amazing! My husband and I just finished reading "America's First Daughter" about Thomas Jefferson's daughter, Patsy, who was considered the most educated woman in America during her lifetime and served as the part-time first lady for both her father and, late in life, Andrew Jackson. "Astoria" sounds like a fascinating book.

It looks a very interesting building full of charm. Yes, it looks very unusual indeed. I would love to visit it in person to take some photos of it. I love old homes which have been built with loving care and an eye to interesting detail. The craftsmen did a wonderful job at creating this lovely building.

@maximax8 - I agree that the craftsmen who built this were amazing. I do not think craftsmen like that do not even exist today!

@maximax8 - No, I don't think today's builder have craftsmen like this. If you want some fancy detailing, it is usually a molding made of plastic!

@DeborahDiane Oh no and I would hate to know the cost of revamping one as well! There is one similar (not nearly as grand) here in our area and it is very pretty.

@Shellyann36 - I agree. The detail work is amazing. Could you imagine asking a contractor to build something ornate like that, today?

I'd love to snoop in every nook and cranny of that building. I wonder if they have Halloween tours? I've bought a house that was built in 1900 but it is a plain Jane house that looks like a retired farm house. I love it, anyway.

@sallypup - I love old homes. They have so much charm. I think a Halloween tour of that house would be wonderful! I'll have to ask my brother-in-law about that.

@DeborahDiane I am looking forward to the time when we can move our old furniture and us into the house that we bought. Sure will be weird to be sleeping in an upstairs again. I haven't done that since I was a teenager.

@DeborahDiane By European standards it's not considered old, buildings of the late 1880 are common here. No matter the age is really nice.

It is a magnificent looking building and I too appreciate this type of architecture. It looks as if it has been very well maintained. It does look very Victorian. Quite regal and makes a statement about the owner.
