Do You Hoard?

I tend to keep more things than I need. For instance, I have a bureau full of yarn. I keep saying I will use it up one day, but there is more yarn than I will ever need and when I start a new project, I often go and buy specific yarn for it.
I keep other things, too, and I have an excuse for most of them. They do save me money and time because I can often find, if not exactly what I need, a good substitute.
Old sheets become napkins, dish towels and pillow cases, old towels become washcloths and cleaning rags, chipped canning jars or old pickle jars etc., hold dry goods and refrigerated drinks, Then there are the long twist'em'ties that come on bunches of produce. I kept them and tied my lattice fence back up when it fell down.
Do you tend to keep things like that? What do you do with them?

I don't hoard much and only buy what I really need. I try to keep my place as simple as possible.

Yes, we are sisters under the skin. I even have old clothes that I plan to recycle, if I do not go back to work. You can take a worn bath rug and back it with a towel to give it more absorbancy and other things like that. Until they are just threadbare, there is always a use.

I would say you are a practical hoarder . You hoard things but also use the things you are hoarding.
I am a hoarder as well. I like to think I am practical in that I hoard blankets but I have also found myself hoarding things that I don't need. I've hoarded papers because "one day I might need them."
I haven't yet.
I used to hoard yarn as well but then I realized I was not quite the accomplished needlecrafter I thought I'd be. I gave that "hoard" to my aunt. Now she hoards it.

@peavey Have you thought of looking for "Scrap yarn" patterns or "de-stash patterns".
I'm sure there are plenty of people who have made up patterns for things just to use some yarn they've been meaning to use.
I forget whether you crochet or knit?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Oh, yes, I have so many patterns for odds and ends and have made up some of my own, but I still can't use it all, especially since I can't knit as much as I used to.
I just knit. I have tried crochet and just can't grasp it very well.

I remember when one of my sisters in law lived near Mom and she was always coming around to see if Mom had rubberbands, or some string, or a plastic bag, or.... Mom always had it. I don't think my sister in law ever got the idea that she could save a few things herself.

Not yet for me, but I see my mom do this all the time. the towels have become rugs or have become wash clothes, sneaker laces have become tiny ropes she uses and the list go on. There was this one time i cleaned up everything and put it outside so i can take it to trash... but my mom got them all back. :D We never ran out of things at home and whenever I need something, she will have em. like a small plastic, or pouch, paper bags, etc.

@peavey Actually i don't admit to my mom but sometimes really it is helpful in a way. just as long as all the things she keeps are well kept. We do not have to spend on trash bags because we got some plastics she uses for the trash to be taken out weekly so its one savings too! :D

I'm trying to shift to a minimalist lifestyle nowadays so I'm either selling or donating the things that I do not use anymore here at home.

I do not, in fact when the spring comes, I have plenty of little things I need to dump.

My mother bought material, which I inherited when I got her sewing machine (that doesn't work) However, I love to sew, and intend to use that material. I already used some to make pillows for everyone to remember Mom by. I can't say I'll ever use the rest of it, but it's there, and it's not going anywhere. So, I do understand about the yarn. I collect knickknacks usually the Christmas villages, also oil lamps. I keep telling myself it's time to get rid of the village houses. I am overflowing with them. It's something I really do intend to get rid of, not all of them, but a good portion of them. I also collect dishes, something I had to stop myself from doing as you can only use one set at a time anyway, and I have three, one good set for holidays.
With living in an apartment, there really isn't a place for all the extra stuff I have, so I need to get rid of it. Somehow.

I understand completely. I collect Santas and can't even display them all any more. I need to get rid of some, but which ones?? I have a few oil lamps, one of which was Mom's, most of the others were gifts, and I will keep all of them. Some things are just too precious to get rid of, even though they take up space.
The yarn... maybe one of these days.

@just4him I have used them, believe me. I keep lamp oil on hand all the time.
I made some village pieces from plastic canvas, but just a few. My Santas are the biggest problem. I did get rid of a few last year, but still have way too many

@peavey The oil lamps come in handy, if you have oil, when the power goes out. That's great you have your mom's oil lamp. I plan on getting rid of all the village houses I bought at thrift stores and yard sales. That will cut down my collection a lot and make it manageable.

I don't waste much at all but I had a good declutter a couple of years ago when Vince went to Nepal. I find it easier to declutter and reorganise when I'm on my own. I had a stack of baby yarn and crocheted dozens of tiny beanies for prem babies. I tried to finish up some unfinished projects and managed to bite the bullet with some items and donate them to the op shop (thrift store). I felt really good once I'd got rid of some of the items that, in my heart of hearts, I knew I'd never get around to using. I give empty jars to people who make jams but keep one or two for myself and, like you, I make rags from discarded items.

It does feel good to get rid of things that have no use or that I won't use myself. I have to make myself start going through things, though, but once I've started, it isn't too bad. The biggest problem seems to be that as soon as I get rid of something, I need it!
Crocheting or knitting for charity is a good way to put a dent in a yarn stash.

@JudyEv Farmers used to always have a pile of "junk" they could count on to repair or replace many things, from nuts and bolts to sheets of metal. I used to live on a couple of acres and there was an old house that we used to store all kinds of odds and ends. It not only saves money but it saves a trip to town.
My "hoarding" is just a continuation of the way people used to live, saving bits and pieces that could be reused. It makes sense to me.

Yes especially this time of season... typhoon season. Just last week we had so much water in the region due to moonson, low pressure area and typhon and we're stranded in our place. We need to have hoard things like instant noodles, coffee, rice and other necessity because we cannot go to market during this time.

In some ways, Yes I would say I do. I also have more Yarn than I will probably ever use and should consider reselling some of it since I never make the projects I set out to make when I bought them. Also have other items I really need to try and sell etc if I ever can and make some much needed space.

I do keep things for extended periods of time hoping I will need them again. Otherwise I'm pretty organized. I also use old items like t-shirts to use as rags.
