Terrible disasters around this summer.

We have just gone through one of our most unusually hot few weeks. For us in the UK this is an extremely rare event. Some may laugh at our horror of coping with temperatures of around 34C (93+) degrees we are just not used to this kind of weather. We do not have air conditioning as standard in many of our ancient buildings although some of the very old buildings are built in such a way as they are nice and cool whatever time of the year. Spare a thought though for the people in Japan who had 2 feet 60 cm of rain fall in 24 hours causing mayhem. Then to experience temperatures exceeding 40C (104F) causing many deaths. My thoughts also go to the horrific fires that have happened in Greece just outside Athens and also to California where over 500 buildings have burnt to the ground. Some are caused through deliberate arson. Wherever you are or may go your first priority is to work out an escape route when you arrive. If staying in a strange place like a hotel, Know where the fire escapes are. Make sure you take good care of yourself and hopefully all will be well. Don't become complacent. We are extremely busy at work with people who have become ill through dehydration and trying to get them rehydrated is quite a feat in itself. Remember to be safe you can do a lot to help yourself.

This is a terrible summer, in Greece they had the fire first and the flooding yesterday. I must drink more, I know, too often I "forget" to drink.

It has been very uncomfortably humid here in Connecticut, it makes everything seem damp.

March is a fire prevention month in this country because it's the beginning of the summer season. It's also the season where there are a lot of fire accidents including grass fire.

I can understand how uncomfortable it could be when a person is not used to such temperatures. We found Tasmania to be very cold according to our standards.

@JudyEv Funnily enough I was reading some research the other day about acclimatising to different temperatures and apparently the body takes two weeks to acclimatise. I am not sure I could ever acclimatise to hot and humid temperatures. It is the humidity that does me in. Secondly most people holiday for around two weeks so just as you are getting used to it your holiday is over and you are back to your original habitat. How lovely to see you @BellaDoc I hope you and the family are well.

@BellaDoc People do seem to acclimatise whenever they move to new areas. We found Tasmania very cold. Maybe we'd have got used to it if we'd lived there long enough.

I grew up in Geelong, with little heating in Winter. When I moved to Sydney, I had no heating and didn't need or want it, ever. After living in California, I want an electric blanket every time I visit Geelong.

the weather has been weird everywhere lately. I read of places which never had snow, now suddenly have it and vice versa.

We are in an ongoing heatwave. Its been going since June. We do get a few millimetres of rain here and there, but not nearly enough as what we need. Humidity is the killer. This is a global thing it seems. Every country in the northern and southern hemispheres is experiencing extreme weather conditions. I think I'll stay put in my home country for now and not travel anywhere until this weather balances itself out.

I am sure that this phenomena has been linked to the planetary line ups although they do not seem to be using this excuse this time. The weather forecasters seem to be using new terminology like weather bombs snow bombs tornado bombs etc.

I heard about a honeymooning couple to Greece. The husband was killed in the fire and the wife is critically ill in hospital. I am quite used to temperatures of 34 degrees C because I am used to high temperatures abroad. My son is in a wheelchair and if we go on a high up hotel room I wonder how we could escape a fire. I feel so sorry for Japan receiving that much rain. There was a block of flats in London that burned. One lady flooded her flat and stayed alive. Wow.

Very good advice about fire escapes especially when it's vacation time for many people. Between the rain and fires here in the US it's been crazy
