Chocoes

This arises out of another discussion, where the writer mentioned choco. In that case, she was talking about chocolate, but it set me thinking about the vegetable, choco (also known as chayote, something I didn't know till I went looking for a picture of them.)
The choco is a kind of squash. In itself it is pretty tasteless, but it takes on the flavour of whatever you cook it with, which makes it a good "fill out" vegetable. My mother used to tell me that during the Depression and war years they had a recipe that made chocoes taste like pears.
When I was a kid almost every house had a choco vine growing over a fence, and even when my kids were growing up they were still popular. One year my younger son stripped our vine of every single choco, and sold them door-to-door round the neighbourhood.
Do you remember choco vines?

We sell them in my store as chayote and I've cooked with them before after asking customers how they tend to use them. I think zucchini a and summer squash are bland to and I've cooked all three before with diced tomatoes and basil. Very ready that way.
The ones we get are rounder looking more like apples and smoother as well. I'll capture a pic for you sometime.
