Did someone say Halloween?

Eugene, Oregon

We were in our local big box Costco store this morning getting a few things we needed. Apparently, everyone in town needed things, because it was one of the most non-holiday crowds of shoppers we have ever seen there. Rounding a corner, pushing my cart carefully through the packed aisles, I saw my first Halloween costume display of the year. Princesses and police uniforms of various kinds seemed to dominate the rack. I suppose this is happening in all the stores in town. No sooner will those costumes come down than the Christmas and other holiday decorations go up. We live in a rush I guess.

I was thinking surely it's a long time to Halloween and apparently it is.

It is, for all but the retailers and the kids who see the displays and start agitating for new stuff.

@JamesHxstatic We didn't grow up with Halloween so it's hard to get enthused about it. I know it is a very big deal in many countries. In Ireland some of the houses were just about covered in fake cobwebs. At my house, most of them are real! Maybe I should celebrate Halloween after all.

Nothing like this for the moment. From today I have seen some "back to school" stuff, but not a lot for the moment.

@LadyDuck I guess your country Switzerland is smarter than our country. I so wish that we had that kind of law.

@JamesHxstatic We finally have a law concerning when to start the sales, it must be no more than 1 month before the "event". Schools start the 3rd of September, so the "back to school" started at the beginning of August. By the end of September they can put on the shelves Halloween stuff. The exception is Christmas, they can 45 days in advance. This is a great relief.

I am glad to see the Halloween stuff being put out. It takes almost a month to get my trail ready so early is always a plus that is why I buy throughout the year so I will be ready for Halloween.

@JamesHxstatic I really do. My husband don't share my enthusiasm but it does help me with my props when I ask him. Sometimes he will just volunteer.

It's how retail works. We've had Halloween up for two weeks now.

It seems so ridiculous to start so early.

@JamesHxstatic People want to have something to look forward to. To many people the holidays is that thing. We have already sold a lot of Halloween stuff. Itll be here before you know it. Christmas stuff has to be on the sales floor in three weeks.

Every store wants to be one step ahead of the others on the costume display.

That is just the stupidest thing ever. First I want to enjoy the rest of summer and then I want to get used to the fall and after that, we can talk about the rest.

Yep, I think stores always try to be the first to get their holiday wares on the shelf so you buy there!
