I always have this worry that I won't find another job because I'm turning 40. And that is what is keeping me from my current job even though I want to quit. Does my fear have a basis?

Yes, I hope so. And thank. I don't know what would best fit me yet. My current job povided food on our plate for 15 years but health suffered as well. I am now hoping for a more flexible job like an online job. But I feel even with the education I got, I get rejected lol. Maybe I need to prepare more and develop skills. And I think it is also due the fact that competition is tight.

if you look long enough you'll find something.some employers are just as hesitant to hire older people same as teenagers because they're afraid they're job hoppers.kinda depends on your resume tho.

@yoalldudes I don't believe age should matter. Think it really depends on the company and also the person interviewing you. Even younger ages have difficulties too. Companies can have this annoying thing where they want staff who have experience. But you can't get experience unless you work! It's unfair at times!

Turning 40 is not the end of the world when it comes to finding a different job, especially if you have some skills that would help qualify for you something better or different. For some places it might which is a shame, but learn to find ways to help sell yourself and that usually brings some Great results. Best of Luck

Thank you for your encouraging words. I'm not very talented or skilled though. But I'm thinking maybe I can train to be a VA/Accountant/Bookkeeper. I hope it gets my interest and doesn't bore me.

If you are talking about in our country, yes it is hard to find a job and would hire a 40 year old applicant. But if you are confident about the working experience and the position you are applying for is of the top management then it is a different story of course. Most of the employers prefers the younger age because they can still accept lower wages and just needs to be trained to work for them. But if you would be applying for a higher positions, most employers are looking into age and experience of the employee.

@yoalldudes Yeah there is but if your confident with your resume you can still be hired. It is just that every year more and more young blood goes into the market that employers pick easy over those that are aged 40 and above. But as I have said it if you are applying for higher position that can be a different story. Companies would surely be looking for age and experienced gained.

I think so. The competition is always available and elders have so many responsibilities and it is hard for them to focus on work only. Besides, they don't have much energy like the youngs. And their salary is usually higher and because they have working experience. So if your skills are unique and you can still get a job easily, or the age will become to be a barrier.

I plan on acquiring skills but of course it doesn't give assurance I can get hired.

It's not. There are people who are still able to find a job even if they're already more than 60's. You just need to search around. In my previous company, they have over 60's and they still hire him to work with them

Most companies ask for experience, yes you can get another job with a higher rank and better pay. But before you quit the current one make sure you have a new one intact.

Ageism is the prejudice in society no one will discuss. Young people are sympathetic to everyone but those over 50 whom they seem to disdain and is reflected by the difficulty in older people getting a job. Employers have admitted they will not hire anyone over 50.

Sadly, I couldn't do two things at a time, due mainly to health issues. I was hoping online jobs would fit me because it is flexible. There are those that you can do just when you want to like few hours a day or even none on other days as you please.

There are many places that hire people aged 40+. Call centers, retail stores, coffee shops, fast food restaurants...etc. Life BEGINS at 40, it doesn't end at 40.
