I have to bury the kitten tomorrow

This morning the kitten met us right on the side of our house today near the door. I snapped a photo of it which is the one I shared here.
It looked like it threw up as it has stuff stuck to its mouth. I cleaned what I could off and as I was wiping his chin he tipped his head up and was enjoying it. It was adorable!
The kids brought it in and went outside to play with it on and off all morning. My daughter went to her friends house at 1.
It started raining and the kitten was huddled on our back porch near where my son had been rocking him earlier in a rocking chair. It cried and I saw it was wet and shaky so I brought it in, wrapped it in a hand towel and laid it on my chest.
My son and I took turns cuddling it for hours. My nephew came over to see it and hold it. It cried so I took it out to pee then brought it back in.
It’s eyes seemed to look odd, a bit unfocused and glazed over. I tried to get it to eat and drink more but it wouldn’t.
As skinny as it was I figured I needed to force it to get nourishment by giving it kitten formula.
I called the pet store 10 miles away and they had a bottle and a can of formula but were closing in 10 minutes. I told them I had a kitten that was dumped and not doing good and asked if they could stay open until I got there and they agreed to stay a few extra minutes.
I got off the phone took the cat off my chest and when I did she did a funny shake thing which I assume now was a seizure. I laid her in a pet carrier and set her in my bathroom.
I sped to the pet store and back where the roads were starting to flood.
When I got home she was laying very odd and making a really odd cry. She had a bowel movement in the cage.
I scooped her up and wrapped her in another hand towel. She took two swallows of the formula. Her eyes were fixed and she made a few small meows while I pet her and let her know I was there.
I sat with her for a long time. I had to get my son a late dinner so I had to lay her down. I kept checking on her and her breathing got more shallow each time. The last time I checked on her I watched her take her last breath and cried and pet her. I hope the rain stops tomorrow so I can bury her.

@shaggin I hear you. Years ago a kitten of mine must have got into something awful. I fought hard to keep him going, taking a spoon, dribbling water into his mouth, carrying him like a human baby. He made it for many years but oh the heart break you are going through. I truly am sorry.

Poor little cat, she is still so small. If only she could meet you earlier.

@caopaopao if this ever happens again I will get my boyfriend to set a live trap to catch it to bring it to my property to care for it right away. It lived outside in the cold and rain with not enough food for too long.

@rakski It is so sad! I was so excited to have found it a great home it was going to. It was fine then started dying so suddenly I didn't expect it at all. I kept hoping for a miracle but it didn't happen. Even today I looked out where I laid him in the pet carrier and was hoping to hear his meows but no miracle happened I am so sad today. I'm here sipping my coffee and am trying to motivate myself to go bury it. I should have out on waterproof mascara today.

as john roberts said, it sounds like she was already sick and, of course, you had no way of knowing. but as others also said, you did you best and it enjoyed being cared for, probably separated early from its mom and siblings, before it passed away.

@hereandthere it seems like it just was waiting to come in and be held so it didn't have to die alone. I think it was so malnourished living outside long alone in the rain that by the time we got it it was just too late. Although it did eat cat food I wish I did thought to bottle feed it sooner. Maybe it would have helped get it a jump start on healing.

@JohnRoberts I guess so If I could have brought it to my property sooner it might have thrived better but it was so undernourished for a week or more.

@nanette64 I wish I had tried buying it kitten formula the day before. Even if it was eating food it would have helped it thrive faster to have formula I think. I hope it never happens again but if it does I will know what to do quicker.
