Watching marriages with several wives.

I´m watching a reality show on TV with marriages with more than one wife and several children. This is in Utah, US where that is legal. Although I look at it with just one eye, I cannot but help asking myself some questions. I am not interested in the morals of it. I am not against men having more than one wife or women having more than one husband if they can manage it. But those families with 13 or 14 small children overwhelm me. It is the same that happens to me when I read about people who have too many pets. I think I need more space for myself than these people. And then, where do they get the money to raise so many children? They don´t look rich. What do you think about these kind of families? Would you consider it? Do you think it would work in the long run?

Its not legal! and only one woman is legally married to him. The other women have a religious ceremony but its not actually marriage. Its like being married to one and living with the others, I agree they should not have 20 children, its not fair to the children. As I have read, most of them are living on the government, food stamps and welfare checks.

@andriaperry I wonder how is it that this has so much rating. It is not worthwatching it more than 1 or 2 times.

Thanks for explaining. They seem to have enough means though. They have cars and big houses.

@marguicha Sounds like sister wives. That show has been on for several years so they should have made plenty from the show.

I don't support that type of lifestyle. How much of one thing do people think they need?

Are you against the marriage or at the amount of kids?

@marguicha I'm against the greed of one man occupying more than one woman under the sacred institution of marriage, for whatever gain he hopes it will bring him.

@Starmaiden Those people looked quite happy in the show. Although, they looked quite simple people too.

it is a dangerous environment, dominated by religious dogma and discipline too - even mainstream Mormons avoid them

From what you say, it sounds more like a cult.

@marguicha it is, very much so, so is Mormonism in general but the poly-splinter groups are worse

I see that @andriaperry already explained you how it really works. Legally they can only marry one woman.

I now get it. Still, I don´t understand how they manage. It would drive me crazy.

I'm like you. It doesn't worry me that they do this but I certainly couldn't cope with so many around.

I had 2 daughters and they were not rebel children or anything like that. But 2 was my limit!

Yeah I’ve watched one documentary about this also and I am astounded by the numbers have lots of siblings and the wives tolerating their co-wives. It is kind of weird how the family dynamics go about their daily lives.

I don't like that. It is wrong to have more than one wife. The love should be single-minded.

I imagine that some people don´t mind. As some people don´t mind cheating husbands or wives. I would.

I think I may have seen the show you are watching. I watched one or two episodes before I had to stop. I was curious, which is why I watched it. I don't have anything against this, if it makes people happy. It is when it's ingrained in someone via a religion that upsets me. I think I stopped after they started talking to one of the people who didn't want to have anything to do with the life, the person was trying to get away from the family. I don't recall the particulars. I am not sure if it would work in the long run.

There are lots of religions and beliefs that don´t suit me. But I can see that they suit other people. The only time that a belief bothers me is when they try to pound it on me.
