2011 – Vintage Press - Spoiler alerts A few people ask me what I think of this book, as I am a writer, with some erotica among my own output. Fifty Shades is quite simply one of the worst books ever put to paper, and I’ve read some Jeffrey Archer. Not only is the plot unbelievable, the book contains some incredibly bad writing and poor grammar. James wrote the series (actually three novels but I only read the first), as online fan-fiction based on the Twilight vampire novels by Stephanie Meyer, itself a badly written book series penned as a safe-sex Mormon allegory. The Fifty Shades series either misses that point, or wilfully flips it over. Grey I a mysterious Bruce Wayne style billionaire in Seattle. Thanks to her best friend being indisposed, Ana (Anastasia) gets to interview him for a student newspaper, only to find herself stalked by him, and then drawn into a world of kinky sadistic sexuality with him, after signing a hefty contract, but ultimately his tastes prove too much for her and the couple split up, a cliff-hanger resolved for the second book no doubt. Problems abound. Ana is a total drip, while Grey, for all his money, is just a creep. The sex scenes themselves are quite dull and don’t happen frequently enough. The writer shows little real understanding of a sado-masochistic relationships. Safe Words are barely used and some people copying scenes from the book in their own relationships have ended up injured. Grey is quite an abusive character, scarred into a bullying stance after abuse in his own past. The aim of the book series is ultimately Ana drawing him towards a more tender vanilla style of relationship, while being in awe of his wealth, private jets and helicopters (despite knowing he is absurdly rich). Other characters get little to do, while the most absurd and prolonged sequence is the contract of rules that Grey imposes on Ana. It runs over several chapters and just about every clause should tell her to tell him to get lost. As mentioned in comments, Ana doesn't sign it but the contract is still very much what Grey desires of her. A new series of books by the author apparently tells the same story from Grey’s point of view. I won’t be reading it. For one sex scene, Grey ties Ana down to a bed using cable ties, the kind used in many warehouses and packaging firms. This led to hundreds of men buying cable ties from Do It Yourself shops which struggled to meet demand, and as the customers bought no other items it was obvious what they wanted them for. HA, she does manage to get her points across, pun not intended~ I don't think most were reading that book for the style elements.

Since it is a poorly written book that must be the reason I found the movie The Book Club with four top actresses boring. The book they choose to review in the movie I this one. At first, they don't want to read it and then they do comparing various things with what is going on in their own lives. If I could not understand the movie I would not even try to read this book. I never had an urge to see the Fifty Shades movie

I have not read the book, I watched the movie because my husband bought the DVD. What to say, the movie is boring, this long contract with all the rules is boring. The scenes are not interesting nor exciting, I wondered what was all the talking about this book and the movie, there were so many in the past a lot better than this one.

@NJChicaa true, but it is still indicative of what Grey wants her to do

@NJChicaa yes, they each bend the other as the story moves towards more traditional romance

@arthurchappell it is what he wanted but he also said he would try to do the “vanilla” stuff. He doesn’t want to lose her because she refuses to agree to the contract and his demands.

I love the theme and subject matter, but based on this review, and many others, I'm glad I didn't bother reading it.

I never read the book nor do I intend to. I hope the one with the new perspective is a flop. It's forgotten it was related to this vampire books of which my daughter's read every one. I don't think they bothered with the grey series though. The only grey series we watch is Grey's anatomy, lol.

@MarshaMusselman Grey's Anatomy is regarded as a great TV series though I tend to avoid medical dramas

After hearing all sorts of stuff about the book, I decided I didn't need to read it. Nothing since has changed my mind.

I did not know the review would come so fast.. Thankyou for it.. It is strange a girl who is in awe with his wealth could make him fall in love with her than the girl with whom he was in relationship, the girl was loyal and wanted to be with him only..

@arthurchappell At moment of time, I felt, Grey was attracted to her because Ana was virgin and Ana got attracted to him because of wealth... So, definitely it is impracticable relationship..
