Ever considered selling (or donating) your hair?

Years ago, I was just walking through town when someone approached me on the street and asked me if I wanted to sell my hair. I never heard of such a thing before, so I was like... uhh, no? Since then, I've realized that hair can be turned into wigs and stuff, and people do buy hair to make them. So I thought, ok, maybe it's something I could consider. That's one reason why I haven't been cutting my hair, though I haven't been able to try selling yet. Have you? Picture attached is an experiment on adding images (like yesterday). I took the picture horizontally. Checking to see how it will attach.

I'm (still) thinking about it. I don't know yet how it will work, particularly in terms of shipping. (Is shipping hair a normal thing? )

@Mavic123456 Ah. Well... that's sad. So far, I've only seen online those people who are selling their hair directly and they seem to be happy with what they're paid for their hair. Not saying that what's in the video isn't happening. I guess there may really be the so-called ethical and unethical ways of procuring them, and end users may not be able to find out under which conditions their extensions come from. I wouldn't mind if someone comes up with a way to regulate or at least oversee that the industry comes up to acceptable standards for all involved.

When i had a long hair, I was once asked by this hairdresser when i said i want to cut my hair short... he tied my hair before cutting it and then styled my hair as i wanted it. i think he did get the hair. i did not sell it, but donated it. :D

Ah! That is more like it. If he cut it, tied it, and set it aside, he might have gone and sold it or else, used it to make wigs, if they made wigs themselves. I find this more likely (and less icky) than if they let the cut hair fall to the floor, sweep it after, then collect it to be sold or used later.

@moirai Yes!! he asked permission to tie my hair because he wanted to save it so it won't be with the floor dust. =) I think that was really wise haha i used to have long hair, i will grow it out and then will have it cut to a short one, so he knew me with my habit like that. haha :D

Anyone can donate as long as the guidelines listed below are followed. We encourage all of our donors to go to a salon they are already familiar with to ensure their comfort when donating.

I think that's a good idea. It's some sort of recycling hehehe!. What you no longer need now can be useful to others rather than your long hair going straight into the trash.

Lessens the dilemma of how to dispose of hair, too. (Dispose by burning usually, but burnt hair smells bad. Some say you can compost it, but it will take a long time to decompose.)

@moirai Yes, you're right. It takes very long for hair to decompose.

@moirai I wanted to give my hair after haircuts for the cancer patients but since I have short hair not enough and I color it and it is getting white before I color it so they will not take it.

A noble thought. :) I guess I'm looking at it in a more practical way. If I know for sure that the ones I'm giving my hair to will give it to cancer patients for free, for instance, I will gladly donate. But if they are going to use it to make wigs that will be sold to customers (example, production companies for use as part of costumes and props), I think it's not a bad thought for me to want to earn from it, too. ;)

Maybe you have really nice hair. But personally I'm not comfortable with it. Having my DNA in the hands of other people lol

Hmm... I've been thinking of only women's hair throughout this discussion. I wonder if they use real human hair when making toupees for men...

We had these hawkers who used to buy those hairs at a handsome price in our neighbourhood. But nowadays I see them very very rare.

I wonder why? Surely there is still demand for it. Maybe they just moved elsewhere and can be back anytime. :P
