No more remakes!

A couple of weeks ago I read they were doing a remake of ALF. ALF! You remember the hairy little alien from Melmac? I was pretty young when it aired, but I have seen it in reruns. I also read they are doing a remake of Designing Women. These two examples are remakes, which means they are using different actors and circumstances. Like the soon to air Magnum PI. CBS is getting ready to air the reboot of Murphy Brown. The reboot is usually when they use the same old characters and actors, like NBC also did with Will & Grace. Or when they recently aired new Twin Peaks, and The X-Files came back for two new seasons, all with original characters and actors. The only remake I watch is MacGyver, and although it's not as good as the original it is pretty amusing. Do any of you watch reboots or remakes? Some remakes that failed were Charlie's Angels, and Melrose Place. Some that succeeded are Hawaiian Five-O and 90210 (several years ago). I wonder how long before we get a remake of The Golden Girls (a reboot isn't possible since all but Betty White are gone). Are there any shows you would actually like to see remade or rebooted?

Los Angeles/Hollywood is running out of original, creative ideas. They are trying to keep the "80's" alive. I believe they need to put the past to rest and take a break from the present to generate original ideas for the future.

@Starmaiden ~I think it's just easier for the network exec's to rely on hits from the past. The world is full of people with tons of ideas for TV Shows and movies. I think that the Entertainment Industry is closed off which makes it hard for people to get their ideas to the executives that clearly need new ideas.

I have to agree with you. I am not a huge fan of remakes nor of reunion shows. Sometimes its best to just leave things as they were.

Some of the remakes are pretty good. I really have enjoyed the remake of Will and Grace. It seems like they haven't lost a step.

I have noticed that several stations are doing this. I do watch Hawaii Five-O and I do catch MacGyver. Hubby does not like MacGyver so most of the time I have to dvr it and watch it later. I am interested in seeing how well Murphy Brown does. Will & Grace seems to be the same, pretty funny to me but I don't really watch it often. I would not mind seeing a remake of Designing Women. I am really uncertain about the remake of Magnum PI. We see lots of commercials for it and I just cannot imagine it being as good as the original. They seem to be set on making it more of an action show than an investigating show. Who knows? Now on to Alf! I love Alf! He was one of my favorite shows growing up. I did not know they are going to remake the show! I can't wait to watch it.

Do you remember when TVLand brought Alf back to host a nighttime TV talk show? I think it only lasted one season though.

I don't know why they make remakes, most of the time they don't do justice to the original show simply because the times have changed and what was funny back then is not funny to the new generations.

I actually watched and enjoyed the first year of the new Roseanne but of course, that won't be returning in that format.

I'd love to see the movie "it' remade but perhaps as a sequel where we actually see the kids as adults trying to take on the killer clown! The last remake they did wasn't good and it wasn't original, I'd like to see them do something different

@AmbiePam ~To me, the networks are just being lazy when bringing back reboots of old shows. It's funny some of the reboots weren't even that popular when they were first aired. "Star Trek" is a good example. It originally aired in the 60's and only lasted for three seasons. Now look at it. There are a lot of shows that spun off of the original "Star Trek, like "ST, the Next Generation", "Enterprise', "Star Trek Voyager", "Deep Space Nine" ( I didn't care for that one.), ect. I, like many others, find it disappointing when networks cancel good well written shows with a good cast. Shows like "Timeless", "Designated Survivor" and "Code Black" for example. Shows get cancelled to quickly. Most of the original networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) own other cable networks. I don't see why they don't move shows with smaller market share to some of their other networks before just cancelling them out right.

I LOVE Timeless! I was so excited when they announced a wrap up movie. It's better than nothing. I agree about moving the shows to cable networks. Timeless would be perfect for The History Channel, or even TNT. Some good news: CBS is thinking about bringing back Code Black after all since the ratings really were good.

yes. golden girls would be great for me because i can idintifiy with that one. i liked will and grace and rosanne, but seems they hardly ever make new of the one and the other got grabbed off for some stupid thing she said which i still can't figure the big deal of. must have went over my head to me Alf made no sense and i never cared for. even with new old gals i would like to see golden girls brought back.

There is a new sitcom on FOX you might like. It's called The Cool Kids, and it about four people who live in a retirement home. A newcomer moves in and shakes things up. Vicki Lawrence and David Alan Grier are two of the stars. It looks to be comedic in the same way Golden Girls was. It premieres September 28th, I think.

The one that comes to my mind is Charmed, the remake is coming on this fall. This is one of them shows that I think they should just leave a lone.

I forgot about that one. I find that one almost insulting to the old cast because they said this version would be pro feminist. Uh, what would you call the original cast? Pushovers?

@AmbiePam That's what I thought to. It would have been neat to make Charmed about the Charmed ones own kids.

It's just sad that Hollywood has run out of new and interesting story ideas, and are stuck remaking and rebooting old shows. Now, with that being said, there are a lot of old shows I watched in the past that I wished were still on. Using your example above, I absolutely loved Magnum P.I., and so when the remake airs in the near future, I will probably tune in to watch it. But, I also realize that it's not going to be the same. I also was a big fan of the original MacGyver, but when I tried watching the new one, I found that it no longer appealed to me. Sometimes, Hollywood should just leave well enough alone, and not mess with old classics.

My sister doesn't like the new MacGyver, but she watches it anyway because she says once she starts a show she has to keep watching until it's canceled. Weird.

@AmbiePam I will admit, there have been shows that I have hated that I watched religiously. Sometimes, you can't help yourself. It's like watching a train wreck. You know it's going to be bad, but you just can't take your eyes off of it. lol

I like the new MacGyver. I need to see if it's coming back in the fall and when, or if I already missed it. Bummer if I did. I like Hawaii 5-O, old and new. Same with MacGyver. There are some shows they should leave well and enough alone. They were better in the original. I've never seen Murphy Brown, so can't comment on that one. I don't know which ones I'd like to see come back for remakes.

I watch reboots, like Roseanne, and the 90210 (which that one I wouldn't really call a reboot.. as all but two cast members were new and different name to the show). remakes.. not so much.. I would HATE for The Golden Girls to get a remake. It would not be the same at all, and hurt my heart to see them kill a fan favorite.

The first new season of The X Files I liked (although some were better than others). Then they did a second new season and they definitely jumped that shark. Now, there is a remake of Bewitched coming. Only they won't be white people. Which, at least, is one difference.

I can't believe remaking ALF. I love that show when I was growing up, but that show doesn't need to be remade. They are remaking Charmed. I would like them to remake American Gothic, Kings, and Joan of Arcadia.
