I think it is the most proper way, it gives you a chance to get to know each other. And find the person that is right for you. I would not want to marry someone I did not know or was not in love with.

To answer your question let me first tell you my thoughts. By selecting I asume you mean as your love partner, in any form or shape (lover, girlfriend/boyfriend, husband/wife). First you need some way to get to know someone. Then you need time to get to know someone. Obviously, you need to be open enough to get intimate. If you do not date then I can not imaging what other ways you would have. In the old days in many parts of the world, perhaps still in some places, the parents decided / made the selection of your partner. If that is what you have in mind... I respect your opinion but with all due respect allow me to wish you luck because you are going to need it. Maybe your opinion on dating is caused by missperseption of what dating means. Well, I have and I would date as the means to select someone to be my partner.

Unless you are going to accept an arranged marriage, then dating is the only way to find a partner. During that time, the courtship, you get to know each other and from there can decide whether or not you want a permanent relationship with each other.

I think so. Because you get to know the person alot more. Also, you get to find out what you don't like about them before you marry them.
