Do you remember when coffee cans looked like this one does?

Yes, this can has a little key on it to be used to open the can.
As the can was given to us many years ago by an older friend, we never felt we could open it. Now, a silly family item, it sits in a cupboard for others to view.
It seems especially interesting to those who never heard of cans with keys! Yes, they did exist and here is the proof.
Do you remember such cans?

We did not look in stores here to see if there are such things @JudyEv
But the coupon was what really makes us giggle.

So it wasn't just here that the keys were used! So interesting @LadyDuck

@PatZAnthony Many Italian coffee companies are in business from the late 1800. I remember that my grandmother told me that the old cans had a key. The oldest coffee house in Italy is the "Cafe Florian" in Venice, it started the activity in 1720.

I have a hazy memory of such cans. Must have been a long time ago. I'd think an unopened can like this might be worth something.

Hello @RonElFran
Hope you are doing well. Haven't see you here for some time-but then I miss a lot of things.
According to Folgers, the can really is just one of many out there, so we'll hang on to this for another 30 years.

The company expressed no interest in owning it, so there must be a bunch still out there @andriaperry

I sure do, when I was a kid I had a bright idea, I stuck the key in an electric socket, needless to say, not a good idea!! lol As they say, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and it may explain my curly frizzy hair !!

My grandma had a similar can that she kept old coins in. I'm guessing hers was from the 1940's. What I like the most about yours is the 5 cents off. It's a reminder that 5 cents was once not a huge amount of money but a worthwhile amount. I remember when I was a kid, most of the coupons were for 3-7 cents....Who would bother with a 3 cent coupon today? Things have really changed.

Yes, things have changed.
We wondered if the coffee would be the same.

@PatZAnthony That is a very good question. Was the quality better or worse back then?

Oh yes, I recall those cans well. Do I recall that things like Crisco also had keys for a while?

@PatZAnthony Oh, yes, you are a lot younger than I. My mother used Crisco, then something called Fluffo came along too .

Yes I do. I also remember that we used to keep the coffee cans and turn them into piggy banks. We would throw loose change in the cans and fill it up!

Yes I do. My parents even saved the cans and used them to store things like nuts and bolts and buttons. The edges were somewhat sharp though!

My 93 year old mom-in-law has a couple of those. I've seen some at antique/vintage stores too. Very cool item!
