How Do You Live In The Day?

How do you switch off your thoughts? How do you pull your mind back from rushing into the future? We are supposed to live life a day at a time. I think that is how we are meant to keep our sanity.
Lately my mind keeps rushing into the future and not in a positive way, not happy daydreams but full fledged panic. I am trying to get myself back in to just living in the day and only the day I am in. How do you get yourself to just live in the day?
Kudos to those who know how to live in the day.
Photo is mine.

That's a beautiful picture!
I think it's normal to have some anxieties about the future as we live in a crazy world at a crazy time. What helps me is my relationship with God and knowing from reading the Bible that one day all will be well and there will be no more anxieties as He will take care of all our needs and more.

@bluesa Ah, thanks. I "softened" that one with some filter or another. I call it "Sunset Painting," even though it's a photo. Do you keep your headphones off so you can take in the sounds of squirrels, birds, the wind, etc.? Nature calms me.

I have found that it helps to set small, positive goals. Needn't be anything big.
Try new recipes
Try new things
Do X number of crafts
Do X much exercise
- these help me each month. And keeping thoughts positive for the future. Allow self to day dream, even if you don't think it's realistic. Look for books on power of positive thinking.....
I hope these things help you :-)

Sometimes I just go into my room by myself and force myself to have a good cry. It seems to relieve a lots of stress and I feel surprisingly relaxed once I am finished. Sometimes my husbands Parkinsons gets too much for me and today I had to fill out all the forms for my mother in the nursing home. The weight of caring for everyone gets to be too much for me. But after a good cry, I am happy and peaceful again.

@bluesa NO one has a perfect life, we all have our crosses to bear but it is how we bear them that counts. I do take care of myself, I know that I need to stay healthy and in good spirits.

@BelleStarr , I am so sorry that your husband has Parkinsons . I understand about caring for everyone just try to remember to take care of yourself too. A person can so easily forget to take care of themselves. It is in a way good that crying helps you.

I'm always thinking about the future, contemplating what I can do in the present to ensure that I have a better future, or that my family has a better future. But I don't let it consume me, I just focus on what I can control, and don't think about (or try not to think about) those things I cannot control. Sometimes, it's pure faith and optimism that helps me get through particularly troublesome times.

@moffittjc a lot is consuming me lately, so I am trying to find a way to quiet my mind, it is tough going. I think I have to try the "pure faith and optimism" route too.

@bluesa I wish there was a way that I could help you. The best I can do is just offer words of encouragement. Hang in there and just try to take things one at a time. Deep breathing and meditation can help too.

I have certain "Zen" activities that I do. Most recently, I was up in Montana working on my fence and other things at our family cabin. I went slow and steady and got a lot done. (See my fairly recent posts.) It cleared my mind because I was focused on the task at hand. Here in California, I do some woodworking (mostly on vintage loudspeakers) and that allows me to be in the moment. I can also just practice my guitar.

@YrNemo , to me at the moment I am not certain what my future holds, I have quite a few regrets with decisions made and I am very worried, it causes me great panic. Yes, as if the volcano wasn't bad enough, now "Lane." Once again a reminder to live each day to the fullest.

@YrNemo my Mom says she won't leave, that her days of travelling are over, and because she is on an oxygen machine permanently I can understand why she feels that way. My Dad is trying to ignore the whole situation because he is not sure what we will be able to do about it. It is all very unsettling.

I imagine each person finds their own unique way of dealing with thoughts which occupy one's mind. I am thinking of the future whether it be simple planning for the next day or dealing with something more complex in the future. But I also live in the moment at times. I would consider it odd to only live in the moment without future thoughts? I might even think it unhealthy? Now, whether those thoughts are positive or negative or a combination really depends on one's attitude doesn't it? Winston Churchill, said "attitude is a little thing which makes a big difference." I've also heard the expression, don't sweat the small stuff. Remember, some things are just out of our control. In answering your question about living in the day, for me usually when I'm focused on doing something enjoyable and keeping busy at it I am "in the moment" and other thoughts are switched off to use your phrase. During those moments I am reacting to my environment and not thinking, just living within my own little world... Hope this is helpful to you "C.'

I don't know how to come to terms with the fact that some things are out of our control, I always need to have a solution and sometimes my solutions aren't the solution and so I need to find a way to let go and just hope for the best @dgobucks226 . I am battling to find a way to to live "in the moment" at the moment, D. Hopefully one day soon my mind will calm again.

@dgobucks226 some things you can't move on from, some things you have to face, I don't know how I am going to face certain things. There is a lot of uncertainty in my day to day life now, plus troubling times in my country to add to it. I am trying to find solutions but some stuff truly is out of our control and as you say for peace of mind I will have to surrender my worries and hope that praying and hoping will bring a solution.

@bluesa Yes I understand Catherine. To not be able to control an outcome is extremely frustrating! Sometimes there is just nothing that we can do to change the outcome and we have to surrender to it For our own peace of mind perhaps it is just better to move on. Savor the good moments and reflect upon them when life becomes troubled...

Living in the moment is something that is being promoted a lot now as having great health benefits. It's fine I think, if you've got all the rest of your ducks in a row. However, if the future seems hopeless, why not try to grab a little happiness right here, right now.
Doesn't always work though. I've had my eye on a ripening tomato I've been growing this year. I couldn't wait for it to be ready, so I went and plucked it off the bush and popped it in my mouth awaiting the sweetness to provide me with the expected pleasure. How disappointed was I to find it bitter and very unpleasant. Should have waited.

Yes, it isn't easy to not worry about the future especially when the future seems hopeless. But I suppose that is when a person has to try the most to just live in the day.
Sorry about the tomato @Orson_Kart , I don't have patience either.

I'm not a worrier and I generally do live in the day. I'm only able to do this because I saved enough money when I was younger, so finances are ok. I don't care to look into the future too much healthwise (especially regarding my husband), but I'll accept what comes.
Sorry you're having a hard time.

I don't have an answer for you except to just keep trying to concentrate on the here and now when you feel pulled into thinking of the future. We never know what the future brings and most of the time we worry for nothing.
