Is the plural of 'genius' 'genii'?

I saw this sign in one of the tourist shops we visited recently. It is quite crudely done and I’m sure the spelling mistake has been made deliberately but I had to laugh at it. I think perhaps it should hang on my wall. And I also wondered what you would call two geniuses. Is it genii? And does it really matter? I guess not. We’re home again now and Vince is busy processing photos from a horse-riding endurance event that we attended on the weekend. The weather here seems to have moved into spring on cue and it is beautifully warm and sunny again although the nights are still a bit cold. Someone has left several boxes of clothes on our doorstep. I’m sure they are for Vince to take to Nepal. I think we have a suitcase full now which is all Vince will be able to take. Off to start catching up with notifications.

In Romanian language yes, the plural of “genius” is “genii” and the singular is “geniu”

I have read all the comments and love how you are getting an English lesson from all the foreign geniuses on here.

The funny thing is that I didn't anticipate or expect anyone to answer the question. I just wanted to share the sign with them but very few said anything at all bout the sign. I guess the lesson is to choose your title with care.

As Maluse already wrote, "genii" is not used. Of course if you are writing in Latin the plural is genii, but in English it's better to use geniuses.

@JudyEv As it is common use it's better, because genii could have another meaning.

I'm sure it's a deliberate error.

He has only been once before about two years ago. He got involved with raising money for the wells then thought he'd like to see where the money was going.

@Hannihar He was interested too of course to see how they worked and if they really were of benefit to the villagers.

@JudyEv I can understand why he would want to see where the money goes.

It could be "Many genius", but not genii I think. So Vince is all set to go to Nepal- that is great!

We have added another endurance ride to our calendar where Vince will take photos but really he just needs to pack his bags for Nepal and we'll have to work out when he needs to take his typhoid and cholera medicines.

I can't tell you the plural of genius-what does that say? Welcome back again. Its great that you've had some donations for Vince to take when he goes to Nepal. Happy catching up, don't overdo it, take your time.

Tomorrow I'll put them in the case and see if they'll all fit and whether we need to buy a few more.
