Traveling Alone for The First Time

I have mentioned in a previous post that I travelled for work last week to Sacramento. I have never been there and now I have to go there by myself - something that I am a little nervous about. After landing in Sacramento International, I have a 40-minute drive to the town where our conference and training will take place. Now I live in a small town in the Midwest, and while I was born and grew up in Manila, it has been a while since I drove in a busy city. I landed there around 5 pm pacific time, which is the rush hour. I have to admit that I am nervous - on personal trips like this, I always have my husband getting everything ready for the trip, like rental cars. Because of the rush hour traffic, I cannot use the car's cruise control. I cannot believe that there are times that we have to do a couple of full stops in the interstate. Thank goodness for GPS, I was able to make the right turns and take the correct exits. There were times that I am almost in tears because the 5-6 traffic lane and speeding motorists make me anxious. All I can think about is that I have to do this for the next 4 days. After driving for the training's first day, everything started to be easier for me. While I still held back on exploring because of work stuff, it did not stop me from venturing further out to check out popular spots, like casinos, restaurants, malls, the beach, and just around nearby towns/cities. Even though I was not able to avoid feeling scared and nervous at times, I am glad for the experience. I am glad that I was able to do it by myself, and now I can say that I can survive traveling and driving in a bigger city.

That's really cool! But scary at the same time. Glad you were able to pull it off.

@Raine38 I agree. It's like the only choice you have to take.

Me too! I guess when you have nobody else to rely to but yourself, you make things happen.

You really learn a lot by traveling. Nothing beats interacting with the locals and getting a first hand experience.

A good trip alone is always nice, but I have mild anxiety so that prevents me from having fun and enjoying the experience, unless I have been there before and I already know my way around.

I am not outgoing so I find it hard to travel alone. I cannot even confidently start a conversation with a stranger. I know this is something that I need to improve on, so experiences and opportunities like this are not really unwelcome.

I have traveled alone only during my business visits else I mostly travel with my wife and friends. Traveling alone has its perks but then sometimes boredom creeps in as you miss your family and friends with whom you can enjoy much more.

Not all the time, especially if it is a new place that I have never been to.
