Why do people say"like" and totally all the time.

yes as the title says.Why do they say like or totally all the time. Most conversation that I have is well you know like etc. Like what?like this,etc.They should replace this another word This is one of the misused word Totally is just as bad. For me I never use it. do you see that bug there.Do you know what it is

That's, like, totally a yellow garden spider. I think it's generational slang. I remember being in 6th grade when "Valley Girl speak" became trendy, and I think the "like" and "totally" are remnants of that.

I was a punk rocker back when, and totally was a major word!!!! As in totally tubular!!!! and I mean like, that's a gag fest!!!! OH My Gosh!!!!

A big ugly garden spider, we have them here, 2 on the deck. The totally and like slang that I remember was an 80`s valley girl movie thing. I don`t use either that I can think. I use awesome, fabulous and wonderful more.
