How much money should you save?

September 6, 2018 5:09am CST
Elders say that saving and investing is the key to becoming rich. But how much should you actually save from your income? If you save everything then when would you enjoy life? Yes, saving is important but shouldn't we have a separate account for vacations or things that will give a memory of life time?

This is a question like How much we must earn? It depends on the situation , how much really we can save comfortably with out making our lives miserable! Savings should be a thing of Joy and not the source of tension and stress!

Whenever I try to think this way, I always end up saving nothing. I do agree to the fact that savings are important, but saving a certain percentage every time do not work for me.

@lovelife1234 , Now since you have identified your problem it is better to start with a small amount per month in your bank, like saving some Rs500/- or 1000/- per month in recurring deposit for a year or two.Once that gets matured you can have fixed Deposit from that! This way you can develop a habit of saving! Believe me saving is an addiction! Once you started doing it you will find it more interesting! All the best!

@AKRao24 thanks..this can work. I can set aside this amount and maybe I'll be able to save much more in the future.

The question is how do you plan to live when you become elder. If you have nothing, life will be very hard. You can enjoy life and save as much as you can.

@lovelife1234 This is true, after a certain age you are well at home. You should make a plan, check how much you can save for a safe retirement, so that you can spend the rest to enjoy life.

Agree, savings are very important for future when I won't be able to work as much, but if I will spend all my energy earning and saving then when would I be able to live life? I like to travel and after a certain age I know that physically my body might not allow me to travel as much.

Saving should be a very important part of any budget because there will always be the unexpected but necessary larger expenses - repairs or replacement of equipment, for example - and you will need extra funds to cover those when they occur. You may also want to save for vacations or to buy a house or apartment or just to tide you over between jobs - there are so many reasons for wanting to save that it's impossible to list them all. Always you should start by setting aside all of the regular and essential bills - rent, water, electricity, mortgage payments, phone contract &c. These are things which have to be paid and it's usually a good idea to set up standing orders for them and to make sure that your bank account has enough funds to cover them when they become due. Anything left over is what you have to live on (your 'disposable income') - groceries and other food, entertainment and other day to day expenses. It depends how much you have and whether it's even adequate to maintain your desired lifestyle (it usually isn't ever, but that's life!). However much it is, if you can possibly do so, you should set aside regularly whatever small amount you can from this disposable income, no matter how small. It may be 5% or 10% or less than that. What is important is that you do it regularly and, in fact, build it in to the regular outgoings so that you don't notice it and regulate your day-to-day spending accordingly.

saving 5-10% seems to be a practical amount. currently, I try to save whatever I am left with after the mandatory bills and monthly expenses. But, I want to start saving more for a trip I want to go to. I hope if I'll try a bit harder I'll be able to save some extra bucks.

I haven't been able to save much till this date, so for me, even this 10-20% would be a big amount. But I guess I would have to start somewhere.

@lovelife1234 yes. Correct. I try to save every payday.

saving one third seems to be a decent number. This way I can settle all my bills and enjoy my life with the remaining one third. Thanks

The main goal is to be able fo save at least 10% every month and in time it really does grow. The hardest part is to make sure and not touch it once you start saving unless it is a ,ajor emergency

It is excellent to have a $1000 beginners emergency fund. Then pay off all debt except for your mortgage. The next step is to build on the emergency fund to 3 to 6 months of your living expenses. After that pay 15% of your earnings into a pension. I learned these baby steps from Dave Ramsey on You Tube. I did a money course and they said have one account for day to day, one saving accounts for less often payments like insurance and one saving account for wants like vacations.

You should save as much as possible but some of the saving or most of the savings should go into investment.

@lovelife1234 you should know how to create a balance. Enjoying life is equally important. Divide your earnings between savings, personal leisure and expenses. This will really help you to solve things. Moreover never forget that littlw drops of water make an ocean.

True. I do save. But the thing I am confused about is should I only save for my future or should I save separately for things or vacations I really want?

@lovelife1234 It was my dear husband who was saving for our future. It wasn't really me and that's why I didn't have to save
7 Sep 18
That's good. If you already have a certain amount saved then it becomes easier.
