Why are apples today so tasteless?

In the fruit bin in our refrigerator we have a whole bunch of apples and oranges. I eat a couple of the oranges every day. But the apples just sit there, even though I love a good apple. The problem is that these apples aren't "good." They look great, but they have no taste. It wouldn't be so bad if we got that kind just every once in a while. But lately all the apples we get at the supermarket seem to have very little flavor. Eventually my wife will use them to make some kind of apple desert, so they won't go entirely to waste. But it's very frustrating to bite into a good-looking apple expecting a fruity treat, and then be disappointed when it tastes like water with just a hint of apple flavor. We've pretty much given up on buying apples. Maybe if everybody refused to buy the stuff stores put out now, they would start selling good-tasting apples again. We have delicious apples in our country. Yet, years ago, I bought Chilean apples in another country (we export apples) and they were awful. As you say, they looked fine, but they tasted moldy. I think they took them from the tree while still unripe.

I've never been to Chile. I may have to come just to get a good apple!

It isn't just the apples that are tasteless now, how about the tomatoes?

when we were growing up, we only saw apples the last quarter of the year (they were imported) and we could smell them. we associated them with christmas and santa would put them in socks. now, they're available year-round, along with other imported fruits like oranges and grapes, but don't give off that anticipated scent.

I never thought about that. I agree though, my apples are sitting in the fridge, and I love apples.

We can still get great tasting apples but all around us are orchards full of apples and other fruits which probably makes a difference.

The area where I live in the south of Germany has about 60 different kinds of apples. I'm sure you could find a tasty one. Supermarket apples are often bland. I buy apples at the local farmers' market.
