Can I Address You Sir/Ma'am Here In Mylot?

I know some of you won't. I have observed some really don't want to be called like that for a given reason. It is welcome to some, and others may don't really care to be called 'sir' and 'ma'am/madam'. In my country its so common you hear those words of respect everyday. Though I know, different countries and colors; different culture and tradition. Yes, not only in classroom. And yes again, not only to elderly people. People often address people with ma'am/sir in office, fastfood chain, shopping malls, banks and even in the streets when two people are talking especially when they are workers. And yes, it is overused words. Maybe because, we Filipinos, are so magalang (courteous). Well, its in our tradition. That's why we have these words, ate/kuya for older siblings, tita/tito for uncles and aunties, apo (for us Ilocano), ninang/ninang for godparents, among others. And now we adopt sir and maam as generic respect when talking with anyone. Fellow members, do you think its just okay to address you sir and ma'am?

In England we tend only to use 'sir' or 'madam' to someone to whom we owe (or ought to owe) some respect, for example, a customer, if we are working in a shop or a service industry, or a teacher or lecturer if we are in an educational context. It is actually used much less frequently now than it used to be and tends to sound a little insincere if it's used too often. "Ma'am" is almost never used here, except when addressing the Queen (when it should be pronounced 'mahm' and NEVER 'mam'!). I think that the tendency, in the West, at least, is to think of other people more as equals, unless occasion dictates otherwise, so terms of respect, such as 'Sir' and 'Madam' tend to be used less because they sound and feel insincere if used too often. In a forum such as myLot, where one quite often does not know whether the person you are addressing is male or female, it is best to avoid using any such forms of address (and, especially 'dear', which I know is very common in India but sounds over-familiar and a little ridiculous to a Western ear).

Thanks that's clear. Term 'ma'am' and 'sir' are borrowed from West but now oftenly spoken here. Then I observed these were seldom used here in mylot, then I remember a comment when a member doesn't want to be address like that.

@MALUSE i read it here, this is the reason why I limit myself using 'dear' and 'ma'am/sir' in my comments. Though sometimes I do to Asian members.

I quite like to be addressed as 'ma'am' as I think it sounds very courteous and if it is the natural inclination for that person to use such a term, then I am happy to accept it in the spirit in which it is offered.

That you. Yes, its natural for us to be always courteous. We are shy people and sometimes afraid to speak to foreigners but you can always hear them 'yes ma'am' when asked.

I think when here in myLot we can just call each other by our username. I must agree, we Filipinos are so respectful. Most driver of the public transportation call me madam. I don't know if it is because of my age, but I like it.

@ilocosboy Here, I am addressed in different ways, specially to my close Filipino friends here. You can discover from my recent post how they address me. They usually make the longest thread of comments.

I found out, base by this discussion, not most of the westerners hated to be called by that, some are very much welcome, and now I know most of them.

With Filipino members I'm sure to the majority it's no big deal but I cannot speak for the rest. For Asians ( mostly if not all) calling " friend " or "my friend " is acceptable.

It’s ok, we can practice our culture without forcing anyone to adopt it. Because some are not open-minded.

I remember my college days when our professors would also call us "Sir" or "Mister" or "Miss" or "Mrs." with respect. I particularly remember my History professor who always goes to the library like me to read the papers and in times when I get ahead of him with the day's papers, he would say "May I be the next, Mr. . . .?"

To us your fellow Filipino, It is okay. But to some nationality, let`s better be more casual to avoid criticism from others. Anyways, since you are an Ilocano, are you also from Pangasinan ? Hehehe

Oh thank you. Actually I was always thinking if I can address you ma'am because some western members don't prefer so. Now its clear to me. In here, its like unwritten rule to always show respect to seniors so we don't just address by name but we say "nana", "ale", "apo", "inang baket", lola, nanay, tita (all these terms are for women" among others.

In the west they address a person (they don't know) - - sir or ma'am. And since I know the name of our prime minister . . . I would address him (if ever I meet him) "Justin" - - - And if ever I meet President Duterte . . I am not going to address him - - Mr. President. . I would address him "Digong" hehehe. . . . Patay ako!

Yes, I understand your point. But not all Filipinos wanted to be addressed as Ma'am or Sir. I have already encountered a lot. They said, they are not deserving to be called as such, especially in the provinces. They would prefer to be called Manang, Manong or ate, kuya... I would prefer to be called by my name.

Yes that's right. I asked the question because I once read some, if not many, of our western fellow members don't prefer to be address by that. Now it enlightens me, some want some don't. Have you observed that we are not addressed by our name when we're in the province, only in few occasions.

@rachz_kisses that's it my friend, the best reason why we address them ma'am and reason even those low rank workers, 1. to lighten up the mood, 2. Not to be rude to whom were not yet familiar yet.

@ilocosboy When at work, we addressed as Ma'am or Sir to respect the seniority level of position. But for these past years, they are used to call co-workers at the same level of position, even those low-ranking files, just to enlighten the mood. Probably because we were taught at school that it is how to show respect. And because we do not want to be rude, we simply address Ma'am or Sir to people we're not yet acquainted with... And that would change if the person himself wouid suggests he would prefer to called by his name.

Ideally, I avoid it. It is not being disrespectful. It is something that is not done here so far...so we don't want anybody getting into some habit for which he or she might be laughed at a later date.
