It won't Shut Up

There is a bug outside that has been making a shrill chirping sound all night every night for the last three evenings. It is making me crazy. I want to go out and shoot it but it might upset the neighbors. How do you get a wild thing to be quiet? I don't know what it looks like but it sounds like a fire alarm. It is louder than any alarm and is serenading me outside the window. What disturbs your nights?

Does that work for cars, probably does, hey you giving free car washes, which would annoy me more.

@crossbones27 Maybe an air horn first, that would get the cops there fast, since I would not annoy the neighbors with shooting my house up like a mad woman. I laugh at the thoughts of blasting an air hour and the neighbor jumping up terrified, Look out the window and no one is around.

@andriaperry Its the worse, never move where the front street is so heavy in traffic. Thankfully the neighbors are finally quiet. I also agree, probably get punched in the face if used an air horn but would be fun to scare the crap out of those rude drivers.

I am sure the cops would be quite bewildered if they were called out to your house, only to find out it was a bug that you shot. "Was it atleast a spider, ma'am?" "No, I don't know what it was exactly but it was chirping and driving me crazy!"

I think it must be a cricket or locust or something. I hope a finds a girl bug soon and stops all that wailing.

You are funny. I love this, maybe you can make a story out of it. Or, a new post.

@akalinus I have a story tumbling around in my head, but not about this. It's just something that has been flitting in my head the past few days. I do have a love / hate relationships with the incessant chirpings of insects. It's beautiful but annoying.

Sounds like a cicada and there's probably more than one.

I guess it could have been but as far as I can tell, there was only one. I know what a bunch sounds like. This one sounds like a fire alarm.

What is this thing? We have frogs in Spring and they can be really noisy and annoying.

@akalinus Frogs keep you up all the night if you do not shut up the window.

@LadyDuck I wonder why critters think they have the right to interrupt peoples' sleep.

I think it is a fire alarm bug. It could be a toad but I think their sounds are lower.

We have an owl somewhere nearby and sometimes he hoots nearly all night - or at least it seems that way.

I think an owl hooting would be more soothing. Have you tried yelling at it?

@JudyEv I forgot it is winter in Australia. Owls are not as jarring to the ears as those loud bug noises.

@akalinus No, I can't be bothered going out in the cold so I put up with it.

I have crickets outside my window also. They can be a nuisance, but I always manage to fall asleep.

It must be under my window or on the window. It is so loud. The train is going by now and I think it is listening. It will start up again the second the train noise is gone.

Sounds like a loud cricket. I hope he moves on soon. Nothing usually bothers my sleep unless it's a louder than normal boom of thunder, and then it would only wake me if it was getting close to the time I normally wake up.

I had six kids and I always woke up if someone sneezed or sniffled. I was aware of what was going on in the house even when asleep. Things still wake me up, the train, lonely bugs, whatever.

@akalinus I'm a hard sleeper. Always have been. It takes a lot for something to wake me. However, my kids always did. They were the only ones who woke me from a sound sleep.

This sounds more like a bug than a frog. Of course, it could be a spy frog disguised as a bug.
