Orange You Picking A Tasty One?

I have learned and been taught and even figured out the way to choose great fruit at the supermarket, but oranges are not so easy. Yes, I try to buy the ones that are soft and yield to the shoppers 'squeeze' but that doesn't always work. Sometimes I find the ones I choose are not the nice sweet oranges you expect to bite into.
Sometimes they are a bitter disappointment. My mother did show me what to look for in many supermarket fruit but she neglected oranges. Often they look a rich orange colour and feel juicy but just don't make it at the taste test.
Sometimes my orange is a real lemon! Anyone here have a foolproof method in knowing how to choose a tasty orange? Don't keep this priceless wisdom to yourself.

Not really sure, but I do know that the orange colour of an Orange is not a good indicator of taste. At the supermarket, I generally try to buy ones with a bit of green. Give them a few days of sitting and they are sweeter. It doesn't matter if they are bright orange or a pale orange, if they have a bit of green on the skin, I find that a good thing.

@MarymargII The oranges sold here in Switzerland come from Spain, Italy and Morocco. My favorite are those from Spain.

@LadyDuck Yes the Spanish ones are usually pretty good. I love the clementines that come in around Christmas too!

Still some are naturally sweeter than others. We don't grow them in Canada anyway- most are from Florida or Spain

@MarymargII My lovely mother had taught me to smell them. If it is a strong smell, it means that the fruit is ripe and sweet.

I do smell them- but you are right- if they are good they usually have a stronger taste.

I think it depends more on the variety of orange than on individual inspection of the fruit. Valencia oranges are the juiciest, but navel and blood oranges are also pretty juicy.

@MarymargII I'm pretty sure we keep all the best oranges for ourselves, since we grow them right here in Florida! haha

True but sometimes I do pick an un-tasty orange. I do love Valencias and they are not here long enough.

@shubhu3 She may be noted as a very wise woman. She should hold that secret and perhaps write a best-selling book later. Many are mystified by the secret of the 'tasty orange' haha!

It seems not too many do. Even if they feel softer they don't necessarily have a great taste.

Sometimes they are great tasting and other times- not sweet at all and even dryish.
