Our table is done!

As I mentioned in a previous post, our maintenance guy came by the other night asking for my help. He knows that I like to restore wood surfaces, and he had recently acquired a scratched up but nice table for his entry way. I got him started on the sanding process that night, and he and I stained the table up a couple of days later. Don't tell him, but I actually snuck a little red mahogany and Jacobean into the dark walnut stain we used. I could tell that hints of red and chocolate would nicely complement the walnut stain. I'll attach a picture of the table just after we finished it. I sent him home with some clear Watco Danish Oil (it will protect the top and make it look even smoother), but reminded him not to put it on for a few days. The stain itself needs to "cure" before you put more stuff on it. Another project done. What do I do now?

@andriaperry If you find one near your dumpster, bring it on by and we'll get started.

I'm glad you and he were able to figure out the language barrier. You finished a beautiful project. Yard sales or garage sales are fun. So many people looking for abandoned treasure. You have a talent for making furniture "restored". You should use it.

@TheHorse That's the interesting stuff. I never looked into it, but you don't do ANYTHING to it to keep the value. If that is the case then the stuff would be chipped, or broken and you wouldn't want it. I'm eventually going to read up on that.

@mommaj It's a whole world that I'm just starting to get into. With 1970s guitars or speakers, I'll try to make them look really nice. If they come from before that, I'd better do my research.

I may expand my horizons. But with REALLY old stuff, you DON'T want to restore it or you can lower its value. I have to learn about that.

I have a 65-year-old cedar chest that needs surface cleaning. Wanna come over and do it?

Thanks! Hopefully I'll get one more look at it after he puts a coat of Watco Danish Oil on the top.

That sanding bit worries me cause its too easy to mess up. That is one gorgeous table. Congrats to you. I have an old black swivel mirrored dresser that you would have tons of fun making over.

@TheHorse There is a butcher that does not live too far from me. You show and I promise to have steaks ready- you have to provide the bbq, too, but I bet you can handle it.

The only way to screw up sanding is to sand THROUGH the veneer. You never know how thick it is. Moses Lake. Got it on my MapQuest. Can we have steak and corn on the cob tonight? I require either blue cheese or a light Dijon vinagrette on my salad. The work, of course, is free.

@arunima25 Maybe I'll take a picture. It was buried under boxes of speaker components and such like. Or maybe nobody will care.

I have an oak library table that needs some lovin. Hubby is annoyed I put polyurethane on it, long before I met him. He has put hot stuff on it that caused it to blister. I believe the rest of it has Danish Oil on it.Just the top has the shiny stuff. You wanna come help?

Sure, I will work for dinner and single malt Scotch. I recommend sanding down the top of the table with 150 grit sandpaper until you are beneath the polyurethane. Then oil it up, or stain it if necessary, and finish up with a coat of clear Watco Danish Oil. I avoid polyurethane, as it is basically plastic.

That's a fine piece of furniture, would you know what type of wood it was constructed from and what circa it belonged? Pardon my curiosity, I also keep a couple of antique and heirloom wooden furniture at home, I love wood grains, it turns me on

Me too. My sense is that it's pretty modern. It could actually be what my friend calls Philippine Mahogany. But I'm not sure.

Beautiful job! Now, what you can do? Look for more distressed furniture at a good price and restore them.
