Lunch Time Sunday, Still Raining

The photo is from Saturday after the rush of water over the road had calmed somewhat. Ginger insisted on testing the depth. As you can see, it was about 2" deep where she stopped. I had her on a FlexiLead, so she was in no danger of washing away. I make a pretty good anchor. Thank goodness the winds have all but died down. The rain is another story. It is expected to keep falling steadily for several more hours and then sporadically for a number of days. My missus and I were able to make it to church this morning. There were some roads we saw cordoned off due to flood waters and/or downed trees. Knowing the roads most likely to be flooded, I also knew what roads were probably safe and we made it to town with no problems. Church was lightly attended today. Probably half the usual Sunday morning Mass congregation was able to make it in. I did see several of my students and colleagues. I'm glad to know they are okay. If I may offer a word of caution to those who want to help those adversely affected by the storm - only donate to charities you know such as the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, or a local charity or church you are familiar with. I caution you not to donate through Go Fund Me or any other such site as they are rampant with fraudulent appeals. Nor should you respond to request on Facebook or other social media sites for the same reason. Your thoughts, hopes, and prayers for those still in danger from the storm or her aftermath - the flooding still to come along the rivers - are welcome and much appreciated. I hope all of you are doing well. I look forward to reading your posts.

I know there are a million other more important things than this, but for some reason last night I was thinking about all the great camping spots in the Carolinas, and how they have probably been destroyed, flooded, or damaged in some way or another. And it's weird that my son and I were just talking last week about venturing up that way to go camping once the weather cooled off a little bit.

The path of Florence affected almost every part of NC and I imagine many campgrounds will have a lot of cleanup and repairs in their near future. I had plans to camp at Carolina Beach over Columbus Day weekend. Now I don't know if it will be open.

@DWDavis After Hurricane Irma hit Florida last year, most of our campgrounds and camping areas were closed for months, some as long as 6 months, while cleanup was underway. I hope it's not as bad for you up your way, but with all that flooding, It's bound to affect a lot of campgrounds.

I imagine the church will be standing room only come this weekend if the flood waters are down and all the roads in the county are open.

I'm so glad you guys are okay! We didn't lose power or have any flooding, praise God. It could have been so much worse if the storm hadn't weakened or had come in farther north like first predicted. Good advice about folks wanting to help with donations.

I'm happy for you all that you came through so well. I'm very worried about Wilmington. Just heard a report it's completely cut off.

@1creekgirl A friend who evacuated Wilmington posted a video from someone down there showing part of I-40 looking like a river.

@DWDavis That's terrible. I know I40 and I95 have places that are impassable.

No, thankfully, the water level dropped overnight thanks to the rain not coming down as hard.

What a nuisance..Oh well at least your power stayed on for the most part. We are getting periodic downpours..and as the storm heads North..I am expecting more. Monday should be quite rainy.

The rain is finally coming to a stop here. I just heard that my hometown of Wilmington is completely cut-off by road from the rest of NC. Roads are flooded over or washed out.

Kinda hard to believe that other people take advantage of the misfortune of others.

So how did you manage on the road on which you took Ginger's photograph? Were you wearing some kind of special shoes or Gum Boots?

I was wearing my river shoes. They have a tread designed to grip when traversing moving water. At 190 cm and 131 kilos, it takes a pretty deep and strong current to move me if I don't want to move.

Glad that things have calmed down there. Ginger looks like she enjoys the water. You make a very good point about donating. Sadly those other ways can not be trusted at all.

The way Ginger takes to the water you might think she has some Labrador in her.

Ginger has put on a few pounds as she's aged. She's not the only one around here to do so. Just as I posted that I didn't know about work tomorrow, my principal posted that school is closed for students, optional workday for teachers. I will be going in to work.

The waters have receded in the creek here. It's the main rivers and tributaries we're keeping an eye on now. They are forecast to flood above record levels this week.
