This Mary,Joseph and Jesus statues are Antiques and had been around for centuries in a Church in Spain. It is a varnished Antique that looks sophisticated with history. Well an Amateur painter decided to paint this antique to make it more colorful. Joseph ends up looking like a woman,So Joseph is now Josephine. The churches in Spain never learn their lesson with these Amateur painters. I suddenly remember the centuries old Jesus painting that ends up looking like a monkey after an Amateur painter decided to paint it. There is also a Saint George Statue in Spain that ends up looking creepy after a failed restoration. Oh my word! Keep these Antiques away from these painters who wants to restore them. Look the Ancient Rome statues are originally colorful but their colors faded with history. They end up looking white, and Actually The plain white statues looks better than the colorful ones. Statues should not be colorful, they look creepy with color. They should just be plain with one color. Just imagine if an Amateur painter decided to restore the Monalisa. Keep these Amateur painters away from these Historical Antiques. source.
RANADORIO, SPAIN — It appears the hand of god has blessed an amatuer painter with the gift of restoration in Spain after she colorfully touched up three 15-C...

I saw a picture of the Mona Lisa with a mustache once. People will ruin anything if they have no respect for it.

@CaptAlbertWhisker They should not let just anyone restore priceless art. It took a master to create it and a fool to destroy it. Maybe they think they are funny but they aren't.

@akalinus It doesn't even need restoration anyway. It looks sophisticated in varnish.

Perhaps the Spaniards find it appealing. I don't. The painter left out the depth and shadow which would have made this so much better. But like you, I don't think this statue needed restoration.

I heard this woman volunteer and asked the Priest if she can restore it. The Priest let her. Now that Priest angered the Patrons of the church.

Restoring a statue like that means cleaning the dirt off and retouching worn areas and patching any broken or scratched areas.

Looking at this again, I think this was done on purpose. They painted Joseph's hair as a scarf. They wanted them both to look female.

@CaptAlbertWhisker She was probably a young girl. Girls in those days married as soon as they blossomed into women. What this artist did was to mock the Holy Family and turn it into a laughing stock.

SHe volunteered and the Priest trusted her. The fact this happened twice in Spain before should make Spanish priest should be less trusting of amateurs.
