Went to my credit union today with every intention of starting an IRA account. They won't let me until I talk to a financial advisor. Right now I'm waiting on him to call me and discuss my options. I already have an idea of what I want to do and being forced to talk to anyone about it doesn't set well with me. Yes, I am stubborn in all ways. Still, I 'll listen and see what he has to say. He might have some good ideas worth the time.
I also plan on starting more than one IRA account. I'll admit my work history isn't that great. I have a disabled adult child at home and was unable to work for most of the time she was growing up. Now that she's older I can work but as with most people the amount I'd get for retirement isn't enough so I need to build a nest egg. even if it's the size of a hummingbird egg.

If you open a 401K normally you should go through an adviser since there are many "rules" on withdrawals, aging etc but to be forced into it doesn't seem right. You could buy CD's to mature and keep rolling them over or get a Roth. Maybe you can find a job that offers to take out so much of your check into one they set up? It's how I did my TSP. I started working for the gov in 1995 so didn't have a lot of time to build up a pension and TSP but was able to get enough to live on monthly and cash out the TSP portion for building my cabin. Good luck!

I plan on start an 401K at my job, but I can't until October when the renewals come up. I believe you can contribute to a Roth up to the age of 70. The Roth account requires a $500 deposit at my credit union.

I am sure the adviser is who you need to talk to.

If I didn't know what to do I'd agree, but I've already made plans. To me an advisor is for those who don't have a clue what to do with their money.

@irishidid I agree wholeheartedly. I have never sought the advise of an advisor because unless they are offering the advice from their yacht with an umbrella drink...
They don't know what I know...
