Some of us uses a small pencil sharpener and others uses a big one that you put on the wall with screws. Well I still use a small one, and I do have the big one that you screw on the wall.
I can agree that depend on the quality of your pencils, some will constantly break with the small hand sharpener than with the big one or either one of them they can break the tip too.
I had my frustrations with it. You can have a pencil that the led is broken through the pencil, so that mean you can't use it, that's about it. Quality of a pencil is important, if you don't want to have to sharpen your way through until you have nothing left of the pencil, and not really used it yet.

I have a small handheld sharpener. I also have a wall mount sharpener. In a pinch, I've used a paring knife. That works as well.

I also use a two-holed metal sharpener but have recently had quite a bit of difficulty trying to find a new one. The best way to sharpen a pencil is too hold it in your non-dominant hand and to turn the sharpener instead of the pencil. It takes a bit of practice but really does reduce breakage.
