Holier-Than-Thou Attitude

Some people might not be familiar with the phrase "holier than thou". I'm not sure if it's used much these days. It means feeling morally superior to others.
I think we all judge others, often unfairly. I wish I could honestly say I've never done it, but I have.
But it's hard for me to understand how a person who has overcome an addiction or bad habit, can judge others who still do the same thing.
For example, my husband's co-worker smoked for many years. He finally quit, but now he really looks down on people who smoke and he says rude things about them.
I know of other situations like this. Why do they judge others that way? I'd think they'd be patient and understanding instead, because they've been there. They know it's very hard to give up that addiction!
What do you think? Do you know people like this?

There are a lot of " holier than thou " people who are church goers . I think it has got something to do with being judgemental, boasting.and a wrong sense of achievement. Real holy people are exactly the opposite, they are kind, compassionate, humble and not loud, we should take the Lord Jesus as an example.

Yes, I have met many people (former smokers are the worst) who do this. I'm not sure what it is about quitting smoking that triggers the "hate on" for smokers, but it is a fact.

Thank you @Starmaiden. I wonder if they feel superior now because they worked hard to beat their habit, and they think "Well, if others would just be as disciplined as I was..." Maybe it's one possibility for their reasoning.

@BloggerDi It could be, but most people who overcome addictions usually have more compassion for and offer to help those who are still addicted.

I had this "holier than thou" attitude till some incidents took place in my life which made me realise that being humble is key to success.

Oh yes, I know some people like that, like others have said, some not all former smokers will get on your nerves with that attitude. Like the ones that will keep telling you "you know you need to quit" by yet a month before they were smoking a pack a day. That's like when I was married, for around the first five years of our marriage my husband drank real bad. He finally quit and hadn't taken another drink in around 30 years. The thing was, after he quit he would make sure to let others know they should not be drinking.

Yes, I know that saying. Thank heavens I no longer associate with people like that but I have met a few in my life and they really get on my nerves.

i didn't know that happens and it seems the responses confirmed it. i would have thought people "who've been there" would be more effective in helping those who are "still there."
