We were shopping at a local Mexican grocery store called Jerry's and I ran across a certain kind of candy that seemed to only be available in certain stores in Oak Cliff. The candy sort of looked like an orange rock. It was wrapped in celophane. So one day, a few weeks ago, I decided for the first time since I saw that unusual looking candy over a year ago, to buy one. It sat on the coffee table for days before I had the chance or rather, the inclination to take a bite from it. Well, I finally got enough courage to do just that. I removed the candy wrapping, and it looked like a hard piece of candy, but it was in fact, easy to break off a piece. I let my wife have the first piece. I had not even read the label first. I had no idea we were tasting for the first time in our lives, an authentic Mexican candy called Sweet Potato Candy - Duice de Camote, in Spanish. It was very good. I took another bite and had to ask myself, 'WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG FOR ME TO TRY THIS?" - well, I am a true supporter of the local efforts of the Hispanic community here in Dallas, TX. And I am now a fan of this product. I want to share with you a YouTube about the family behind this candy and the many other aspects of Azteca Mexican Candy IMP. One thing is for sure, this candy is worth every penny. I will be trying other products made by this company because I am now a fan. Azteca Mexican Candy: Meet the Owners - Edinson - YouTube

I loved that when I was a child. My father took me with him on Sundays and many times he bought me treats. This one was one of my favorites. Here we call them "camotes" as we call sweet potatoes "camotes". They are delicious!

@lookatdesktop This, as some other yummy things, are part of my childhood memories. And this is also absolutely associated with my dear papa´s memories.

I only wish I had tried this candy a long time ago. I have some left and want to go get it right now before someone else eats it.

@marguicha , I just finished off that last bite of Sweet Potato Candy and now it's all gone. But I do like the idea of trying out some new candies next week. I like the idea of recipes handed down from past generations. This is the very essence of what culture is about.

It maybe good but that's the one thing I don't eat. My mom used to cook sweet potatoes, not at all for me. But glad to know there's a candy made from them.

Not all of us like to eat sweet potatoes. I know some who don't that often eat them. I am biased towards eating them because my wife cooks them a lot and I enjoy them. Hot. with butter. Sometimes eat them savory rather than sweet.

@xander6464 , It's good that you have access to your Brach's candies. I tend to buy less of the bulk candies and more of the cakes and fudges and cream pies. Every now and then I break in my piggy bank and purchase a good amount of either salted cashews or milk chocolate covered almonds. My guess is, COSTCO sells Kirkland brand milk chocolate covered almonds for less than they would cost at other retailers. Do you favor dark or milk chocolate? I myself like both.

You might actually like it. I did. And for me, that was a first. I don't usually buy that particular brand, but I will be trying other candies and nuts from that company. You may be more familiar with Brach's candies. They have been around a long time and were one of my childhood favorites.

I'm trying to figure out why you waited so long to taste them too... I doubt I will be able to find Mexican Candy here in Canada but I might ask next time I'm in the candy store.

It was more the cost of the candy that kept me from trying it. I had a few extra dollars that day so I went ahead and tried it for the first time and it was worth every cent.

@PainsOnSlate LIkely you might get it online. Anyway, there is another candy I actually had before when my mother made it back in the 60s, another reason I loved the decade of the 1960s. It's called Mashed Potato Candy or something similar and below is a link to that recipe.
This Old Fashioned Potato Candy is a classic treat made with only 4 ingredients and doesn’t require any baking!

If you enjoy candied Yams or Candied Sweet Potatoes or for that matter, Sweet Potato Pie, you would likely enjoy the Sweet Potato Candy by that company in the link I have shared here in the comments section of this discussion. If you try it, let me know how you liked it. below is another very good recipe for Peanut Patties.

I know of potato candy you can make with powdered sugar, peanut butter and potato. ALso a little bit of dye makes it festive. We used to make it when I was a kid from time to time if we had left over potatoes.

Oh, the title pic is not what that candy looks like. I had to find at least one good photo for the title of this discussion so I got the image from Pixabay by typing in Mexican Candy and there were only two pics to choose from. But the candies they make and sell in our area of the country are very many and there are lots of candies to choose from.

I love Brach's candies. I grew up with Brach's candies and Bridge Mix was my favorite and I used to buy it at a retail store known back then as Mott's Five and Dime Store.
From candy corn to Star Brites Peppermints to Peanut Caramel Clusters, Brach's candy is made to share. Make your moments together sweeter with Brach's.
