Butter curls add class to a table don't you think?

The top two photos of this collage have appeared here before I think. The bottom left photo shows a pair of butter pats. Some of myLot’s older readers will recognise them I’m sure. My mother’s family had a dairy and used to make a lot of butter, by hand, for the nearby town. The pats were used to mould the butter into pound (weight) blocks. These were then marked with the imprint of the cow which is on the round stamp. The butter pats were also used to make butter ‘curls’ (bottom right) which some of you might have had in a fancy restaurant – or even a not-so-fancy café. I’ve watched my mother make curls and I’m sure I can make them. One day I’ll have a go at it. The pats need to be rinsed in water and preferably quite cold so that the butter doesn’t stick. The fine ridges in the pats give a nice pattern to the curls. Would you believe I found a photo of butter curls on Wikimedia?

I remember my Mom making those butter curls sometimes, but can't remember with what.

I guess she had something similar to the paddles.

Love the photos. My mom used to curl butter on holidays and when guests came.

A photo of butter curls? Yes, they have many wonderful pictures, those things we have fond memories of. My grandparents made butter, also. But, it was only for personal use and not to sell. These relics are wonderful! My sister made use of certain farm tools, by displaying them on their living room wall lol Butter curls, nope I've never seen them before today.

Anna has a special gadget that makes them. It looks like it would be much simpler if you had one of them.

@JudyEv The butter curls really dress up a nice dinner table! My mother use to decorate our home with different relics, she had kept for many years. We had a butter churn, a school bench, and a metal milk can in our dining area. I love things like this!

@kobesbuddy We had a butter churn too and a separator which separated the milk from the cream. It seemed there were 100 different bits to wash then scalded. We only used it if we were milking two or more cows.

@JudyEv yes I can imagine the right temp would be very important in being able to make them. If thawed too much they would not hold their form and would mush while trying to make them.

There is now a gadget to make curls. I don't know what countries it is n but certainly in Italy as Anna has one. And there is a YouTube clip on how to do it with a serrated knife. We used to pat some butter out quite flat on one of the paddles then roll one end up. The butter had to be just the right temperature or it wouldn't work.

I often serve butter curls, with Tartar steak, Smoked salmon and in the morning with toasted bread or English muffin. We use a totally different curler in Italy, I show you a photo.

@JudyEv It works fine, you keep near you a glass filled with lukewarm water and rinse the instrument every time before making the curl.

I'm into 'class' especially when I eat out. The photo shows complimentary 'bites' we were given before our main meal in Availles-Limousine, France.

Or you can oil so that the butter won't stick to it.

When we just had one or two cows Mum would sometimes still make butter. It was nice the first day but after that we preferred the bought stuff.

The butter curls do look really inviting to eat with dinner rolls. I use a cheese cutter, but they obviously do not look as good as the real deal, butter pats! Love the cow mould ..such a cute idea!
