I just found The Open University. They are in the UK. They are a real university that has a campus, offers paid (normal) university degrees, and they also offer free courses which are portions of their regular courses.
Several days ago, I signed up for Plate Tectonics, because I want to take all their courses related to geology, seismology and volcanology. (I took a course in Plate Tectonics in 1972, but science develops and changes, so I figured a review would not hurt me.) This is a level 2 course and I'm finding it very good, somewhat challenging but understandable. I'm so glad I found a place to study college level subjects for free! I will get a Certificate of Participation when I finish. This course is supposed to take 15 hours to complete. I'm 45% through it. I stay after school and spend an hour or so every day working on it, for fun.
Here is the link if you are interested in studies for free.

That's so admirable. I'll check that out as well. How much did you pay?

OpenLearn is free! If you actually want credit, you have to pay and sit the exams. I don't need credit, I just want the knowledge.
