My house got a makeover…

Ireland
October 17, 2018 12:00pm CST
Only kiddin’! This morning I was looking to visit a garden elsewhere in Wexford. In the end I got a call and had to leave before finding my goal, but look what I came across in Ballyedmond I had a good poke around, and it appears that the cottage was lived in in recent years: curtains still in the windows, no panes broken… But isn’t it astonishing how quickly nature reclaims her property!

In Ireland, nature very quickly reclaims her own but it is a much slower process in Australia.

@NormanDarlo I think probably it's the excessive rainfall you have there.

I suppose humidity is a big factor in that!

Yes, I lived some place some 50 odd years ago. About 10 years ago I learned that nature had claimed it all. To think that it was where I wanted to retire. Sigh.

@NormanDarlo There are many who would love to live there. From my generation and a few subsequent generations. It got into legal disputes, and in India, cases take forever. In the meanwhile, nobody is there to look after the property. I have provided a link. Somebody went there subsequently and mentioned even roads had creepers covering them so they did not go to the park also. There were plenty of snakes even when we were young, so nobody would dare to go there without proper company. It is like hill station, a world isolated, and very peaceful.

Ah, that is saddening. Perhaps it is always a mistake to imagine we can go back. Every step in this life is in a single direction: forwards. Everything changes. When I went back to the wonderful place I used to live for my first 10 years, I found it dilapidated, the house now split into dingy little apartments, paint peeling everywhere that my father had lovingly maintained. And the back lane where I learned to ride a bicycle and where our gang of little kids used to play so carelessly from dawn till dusk was now fenced in, with no access to the public. Sometimes it is better not to sully our memories by exposing them to a reality that has no respect for their sanctity.

I was passing in front of a garden only a few minutes ago. The house is empty from only 4 months, the herbs, grass and weeds in the garden are already as tall as I am.

@leny34 And treat it with the respect it deserves, and realise that we are part of it, not above it.

Didn't recognise it was a house until I saw the door. It looks like its abandoned because the door is already claimed by nature already.

I think it is some time since its inhabitants abandoned the house!

@normandarlo I’ve never understood how cottages can remain derelict and unloved. Give it to me and I’ll take care of it.

I know, Fiacre. It's hard to believe anyone would care so little for such a delightful place.

Please don't blame me for the state of this place! I wouldn't let such a beautiful spot fall into such a state of decrepitude. Not my place, but it does have a certain attraction. If it was mine I'd have brought it to a decent state of repair
