Some Sports are Very Harmful

Yesterday, our older son had laparoscopic surgery on his shoulder. He was a competitive swimmer from age 5 through college, but harmed his rotator cuff back in high school. He finally worked up the courage to seek relief.
We are grateful that his surgeon was able to repair his injury without major surgery. He will recuperate with an arm sling in 2 to 3 weeks.
Last weekend he lugged around our grandson’s heavy goalie gear at Hershey, Pennsylvania for 5 ice hockey games in 3 days. They both visited Hershey Park, the zoo, and went swimming at their hotel. As you can see, our grandson was the most valuable player and helped his team earn the most points to win 4 out of 5 games. He received a silver cup! Fortunately, he had no injuries this time.
Somehow, saying you received a sport injury sounds better than being a klutz and falling. . Have you ever been injured in a sport?

I hope he heals quickly!
I broke my wrist while showing off doing gymnastics at school. I had said 5 minutes before that I had never broke a bone before, then bam!

@DianneN I think I jinxed myself, lol. I screamed like a baby when I broke my wrist.

@LovingMyBabies I don't blame you! I'd scream, too, and louder than you!

I am glad the little surgery went well. I know that I should do the same. I damaged my rotator cuff two years ago working in the garden. I refused surgery, I had many physiotherapy sessions. I can lift my arm, but it's not as good as before. I will think about it another bit of time before deciding.

@LadyDuck It's good to hear that your dentist is fully recovered. My son's surgery went very well. He is in no pain, just a bit of discomfort, and will be out of his mesh sling in the morning, when he returns to work. He's working from home today. He told us he's very pleased with the surgery and is sorry he waited so long.

Congratulations on your grandson being the most valuable player and avoiding any injuries.
I was once watching a soccer game and the ball hit me right in the face. Wow, did that hurt. Another time, I was playing floor hockey (no ice) and was hit with a hockey stick in the ankle and it swelled up and I limped for a month.

I don't believe that I ever had a sports injury. Hockey can be pretty rough I know.

Overuse of our body parts through sports is very common among athletes and amateurs alike. I partially tore my rotator cuff playing tennis. Surgery was recommended but I opted to rehab it not being a professional athlete. It worked out well. I was able to resume my favorite activities (golf, tennis) in time. Not 100% but good enough...

@DianneN It so tough when our body parts fall apart! Wear and tear injuries are a bummer too. We just don't bounce back like we did when we were younger

I'm sorry to hear your son needed surgery. For about a year or more if I lift my arm a certain way or move it a certain way I get this sharp agonizing pain. Like if I have my purse on my shoulder and try to reach the same arm down into it. I refuse to go to the doctor until it gets any worse though lol. Hurray for your grandson!

No, I have never been injured in a sport. I never was in any sport in school. I think it is neat that your grandson is good with ice hockey. I think ice hockey has to be the hardest sport out there, with having to have perfect balance to skate and a perfect aim to hit a hockey puck. I don't know how they do it!

Glad you were never injured in a sport. I fell and skinned my knee going after a racquetball which ripped my pants, and got hit in the throat by a tennis ball. Ouch.
They say hockey is a tough sport. Our little grandson has been skating since he was 2 and always loved hockey. I still need to learn the rules. I never know what's going on.

I was an athlete during my student life. I never got any significant sports injury. But later in life I have developed some health issue which led to surgery and many jerk movements are a strict no for me.
My elder daughter got a hand fracture two years back in her basketball game and that needed a major surgery to fix a spring in her wrist. She needed some therapy too to get back her strength. She could not play basketball for two years. Now she is back to her game but is not so good with performance as she was earlier. Her hand still restricts her.

@DianneN Yes she is. She loves to play and gives her best. That is what being a sports person is all about.

Nope, I have not. Not athletic enough. On the other hand, when my daughter was in third grade she decided to do some of her gymnastics stuff from the bars on the playground. Hard surface, no spotter. Ouch. A break near her elbow. She still has a funny twist to her arm when she straightens it out to the side. Part of her ordered recovery was swimming. She also talked the doctor into letting her play softball in a rec. league and I believe swinging the bat helped her get the range of motion back.

Your grandson is adorable! No, never. I am not a sporty type of person. But I had injuries when I was younger. I had 5-10 stitches on my head.
