Bobtails make cute pets

Australia is often regarded as full of dangerous creatures and it’s true that we have our share. One of the harmless reptiles is the bobtail (Tiliqua rugosa) also known as the shingleback, pinecone, blue-tongued or sleepy lizard. These are now gaining favour as a pet and are perfect for those who are allergic to animals with fur. They have a short, wide, stumpy tail which contains fat reserves. These are drawn upon during brumation which is like ‘hibernation for reptiles’.
You do need a licence to keep one and currently 163 people have licences. They are not hard to tame and are quite low maintenance. When let out in gardens, they will find much of their own food as they are omnivorous. The young girls who were interviewed about their two pets say the bobtails have a cage in the house but spend most of their time roaming around with limited periods outside because of the risk of injury from birds.
They are bathed once a week and their scales rubbed gently with a tooth-brush. The main problem seemed to be keeping track of where they were so they didn’t get trodden on. We see them regularly around our house and if I see one I will put down a saucer of milk for them.
Here is the link to a news article about pet bobtails.

@NormanDarlo No and because they are quite slow they don't dodge very well either.

I am not a lizard fan so I do not find the critter cute at all. It looks dangerous to me but as you were saying they are easy to tame then I guess I will take your word for it. But for me I won't be interested of rearing it as a pet in my house.

Although I do not mind the ordinary kind that are seen on our walls I would not be comfortable handling this bobtail. I remember feeding one lizard that came to meet me on a daily basis and I fed it with biscuits. It was the only one that was black in colour and was kind of isolated. She stopped coming after a while. I named her Lily
She is black and other lizards do not befriend her. I have named her Lily. After trying out many things I finally gave her biscuits and she seems to like bis...

@allknowing It's a small miracle that they can drop one tail and grow another.

We are used to the look of them here. There were some lovely photos of the two girls with Sunrise and Ginger Meg. I'll add the link to the discussion. I'll put it here as well for you.

That is the ugliest lizard I have ever seen. I don't think I could keep something that ugly as a pet. It would remind me too much of me. haha

@JudyEv Is that a backhanded attempt to say that I'm not ugly? Hmmm, I accept your compliment!

Is it safe to keep as pets? It resembles a gecko.

Are those lizards don't bite? Oh my they are ugly adorable one. We usually afraid of that kind because of gecko but this one seems lovable.

If you try to pick up a wild one they will bite but once they become used to you then they don't bite. I never try to pick up the wild ones.

A saucer of milk? Is it a lizard or cat, lol. How large are they? My brother and I used to have pet chameleons which were a lot of fun..

I find reptiles creepy and gross. They are not meant for me.
But looking at their description, they sure are a good choice for pets for those who are okay with them.
