Bobtails make cute pets

Sleepy lizard

Australia is often regarded as full of dangerous creatures and it’s true that we have our share. One of the harmless reptiles is the bobtail (Tiliqua rugosa) also known as the shingleback, pinecone, blue-tongued or sleepy lizard. These are now gaining favour as a pet and are perfect for those who are allergic to animals with fur. They have a short, wide, stumpy tail which contains fat reserves. These are drawn upon during brumation which is like ‘hibernation for reptiles’. You do need a licence to keep one and currently 163 people have licences. They are not hard to tame and are quite low maintenance. When let out in gardens, they will find much of their own food as they are omnivorous. The young girls who were interviewed about their two pets say the bobtails have a cage in the house but spend most of their time roaming around with limited periods outside because of the risk of injury from birds. They are bathed once a week and their scales rubbed gently with a tooth-brush. The main problem seemed to be keeping track of where they were so they didn’t get trodden on. We see them regularly around our house and if I see one I will put down a saucer of milk for them. Here is the link to a news article about pet bobtails.
The iconic Aussie bobtail lizard makes a great family pet as this family is finding out.

Fair enough. I'm not expecting many to like them.

@JudyEv I'd let on crawl on me if it wanted to (knowing that they're safe). But would it be saying (in lizard talk), "I like you, Horse!" or would it be saying "I'm cold-blooded and you're warm. End of story"?

@JudyEv This is something I also wonder. We knew someone who had one, he often had a coffee at an outside cafe, his dog under the table, time by time you noticed his nose coming up and I could see his eyes. He was a lovely dog.

Heck, to me (a hiker in California), they look like rattlesnakes with legs. Do you think lizards know love?

@TheHorse The mother comes across the lawn and the little ones waddle along behind.

I know my friend's pet ones come across the lawn to greet her each morning - but maybe they're just looking for food. One mother one does bring its babies to show her each season.

Wow, look at how small their little legs are compared to that body, how do they not run away when they go outside if they are pets?

They are quite slow moving. I guess if they are happy where they are they don't bother about trying to escape.

They are quite common in Australia. You often see them squashed on the road unfortunately as they like the warmth of the tarmac.

I am not a lizard fan so I do not find the critter cute at all. It looks dangerous to me but as you were saying they are easy to tame then I guess I will take your word for it. But for me I won't be interested of rearing it as a pet in my house.

@JudyEv But I have an uncle who loves all kinds of exotic pets. I am pretty sure when he is given this he would be very happy to accommodate it in his collections of pets in his house.

Although I do not mind the ordinary kind that are seen on our walls I would not be comfortable handling this bobtail. I remember feeding one lizard that came to meet me on a daily basis and I fed it with biscuits. It was the only one that was black in colour and was kind of isolated. She stopped coming after a while. I named her Lily
She is black and other lizards do not befriend her. I have named her Lily. After trying out many things I finally gave her biscuits and she seems to like bis...
