Sh*t. This fire hits close to home.

As I left work this early afternoon, I smelled smoke in the air. I turned on the truck radio and learned that the latest huge California fire is in Butte County. I noted that I had observed strong winds from the North while at work, so I assumed Butte County was to the North of us here. Turns out it's Northeast, and that they're evacuating folks from Paradise CA, which is where I visit my music buddy Howie, and where my current long-term girlfriend, a horse named Holly, lives. I called Howie when I got home, but could only leave a message. Please sent your thoughts, prayers, nickers, or whatever you sent, to my buddy, his girlfriend, and my girlfriend. The air quality here, 180 miles to the Southwest or Paradise, is bad enough that I'm sneezing. But I'm mostly worried about my friends.

I'm listening to classical music on the radio right now. I'll tune in to the news again in a bit. I still have not heard from my friend.

My friend was in tears when I talked to him. It sounds like they lost everything. I still don't know if my "girlfriend" got out alive.

No, they occur in several Western states, like Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

@vandana7 My cabin in Montana is surrounded by pine trees, like Howie's place. DE and JJ live in tornado country.

I spoke with him later in the evening. He is a nurse and was out of town on assignment. He was in tears. He said they lost everything. He doesn't even know if Holly made it out.

@TheHorse Are they evacuating where your horse friend is? Will she be able to get out? Are you being evacuated?

@cindiowens We're 180 miles South (and West) of the fire. But my friend and his girlfriend's horse (also my friend) are at ground zero.

@Spontaneo Howie was out of town on assignment (he's a traveling nurse). Both he and his girlfriend are safe. Their house burned to the ground. But the guest house somehow survived. The horses (and even the chickens) survived.

We actually have a user here on the Lot from Paradise. I cannot think of her current user name. She only comes occasionally. She posted on Facebook last night and thinks that Paradise will actually no longer exist, the entire town was evacuated. She and her 90 something year old mother and her birds were staying in a hotel in Redding. Susan Crossen Hamlin is her real name. I hope Howie and Holly are okay.

I've been out of town for the past few days playing in the NXL Paintball World Cup in Orlando, and I've been completely oblivious to the news of the world around me. Just saw this morning the news of the fires. My prayers are definitely with all the people of California. These wildfires are just crazy! Be safe out there.
