Two days with a wonky internet connection

For the second day in a row, we’ve spent the better part of the day unable to connect to the internet so I’m sorry I haven’t been on here much. When Vince was eventually able to talk to our provider they said it would be out until Saturday evening. Then about half an hour later it’s suddenly started working again.
This morning we put up the lining on the Music Shack. Apart from getting a bit of help laying the concrete floor, Vin and I built this in 2009 and we’ve now had about 34 concerts. We keep the admission fee quite low and the money goes to the musician/s. We keep back enough to cover our expenses which includes insurance and sometimes a sound system.
The walls and roof are of corrugated iron and we hang old blankets at the back and shade cloth over all the walls to help with the acoustics. One of the blankets has a label saying ‘made to wartime specifications’. So it has been around since World War II.

Someday I would like to play a concert there for you Judy. I have no musical talent, and have no idea how to play any musical instrument, and can't sing to save my life, but I feel I could wing it pretty good. People would love me.
That is...they would love me when I finally get run off the stage and out of town!

@JudyEv I don't think I would be hurt and upset at all. Maybe I could make some money with my "comedy" act!

@moffittjc Well, it's a thought! You need to put something on YouTube so we could 'vet' you. We don't just invite any old body. You have to reach a certain standard (which isn't all that high, truth be known).

I have gone through that situation - 'now you see me now you don't' with the Internet. It is history now. I have two good connections which have not let me down
So when will the show begin. What is the strength of the audience?

@rebelann We always enjoy it at the finish. It's probably the catering for them that is the worst part. So many have all these allergies or food fads. And now that Vince's hearing has deteriorated so much we find setting up the sound system causes a few dramas.

Did not having a good connection give you more time to work on the area for the concert? When I saw your previous title I didn't realize that you two put these together yourself.

@JudyEv amazing! Although it does sound like a tiring task. And it sounds like you prepare and bring food for those that come too? Have you ever made it available to get help with any part of it?

@MarshaMusselman We offer the musicians a bed and meals. The audience get free tea and coffee and I make apricot chocolate slice which everyone seems to enjoy. I make the slice ahead of time but sometimes the meals are a problem catering for perhaps vegetarians, (even vegans this concert), lactose free, gluten free (again this concert) etc.

First I must say when my computer is not working I go crazy and end up in my studio painting... Your set up sound wonderful and I love the fact it sounds very well liked and attended. Love the fact one says made to wartime. I hope you have a blast...

@JudyEv this year was my last craft show, just too much stuff to do with the tents and displays. I did the show simply because I had around 300 small slates with funny sayings ( the little pieces are not sold in stores), I was selling them for 10 and 5 and this year I sold them for $1, just to get rid of them. They all sold and I'm glad. My bigger ones that sell for 30 to 40, only a few sold. In the stores, they fly off the walls so that was the other reason I am done with shows... Have a great time with your audiences.

We have a very supportive audience, mostly people about our age from around the district. It is started to become a bit like hard work though and I'm not sure how many more years we'll keep it up. And now those coming next week are vegan which we find a bit difficult to cater for but they've suggested rice and vegetables so that doesn't sound too hard.

I had two great uncles who went away to the first world war but I think these would be from the second. Two uncles enlisted but didn't see action. I guess they would have been army surplus as my father and brother had old heavy army greatcoats that they wore on the farm.

We mostly have the organisation down to a fine art now. This one is a bit easier than most as the musicians won't be sleeping over although we'll still provide a meal. This can cause its own problems as half the time they're gluten free or vegetarian or can't eat this or that. Luckily these are vegan which floored us for a while but they suggested anything rice and vegetables so that's what they'll be getting.

It seems a good idea to build such a concert room with minimal expenditure. In the picture it is looking nice.

@maximax8 We spent seven years in Esperance but left in 1980. And fancy your cousin living near Bunbury. That is our nearest big centre. Bunbury was the only option on my MyLot profile when I joined but we're actually about half an hour's drive from there.

Musicians often find it hard to make a living from their music so mostly they are really keen to do a house concert or two. I know our son struggles with earning a reasonable living. In the winter we might have one indoors as we can fit about 50 or so in the lounge.

@FayeHazel Some of our groups wouldn't pull huge crowds so our type of venue and gig is ideal for them. A couple of groups we got when they were just starting out and they've gone on to much bigger things.

@JudyEv Oh that is so true. Venues expect bands to bring a crowd. Hard for bands starting out. How do you get a crowd of your own, if you don't play out because you don't get the gigs because you don't have a crowd.....
Wow, I would love to see a picture of the lounge
