As @Maluse knows, I survived Angela's Ashes, but struggled through the last 100 pages. At the same time, I was re-reading some Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories and working my way through a developmental psychology book called The Philosophical Baby, by UC psychologist, Alison Gopnik. My music friend Michael just gave me a book called Thunder in the Mountains, about Chief Joseph (he--Michael, not Chief Joseph) and I have been hiking together, collecting acorns, and discussing Native Americans), but a day later Fear arrived, sent to me by my brother as a belated birthday present. It's a book about Donald Trump, written by Bob Woodward, of Woodward and Bernstein fame. I decided to go with Fear. The air quality has been terrible here, thanks to the wildfires, so my girlish figure is disappearing, due to lack of exercise. But at least I am getting some reading done. What are you reading these days?

I have bought the full series of Hercule Poirot novels by Agatha Christie and I am reading all of them. It was a long time I wanted to check how much the movies and series are compared to what the Author really wrote.

@TheHorse The past summer I have read several novels that I had never heard before, very good novels. Now I am watching the different version of "Murder on the Orient Express". After watching the most recent one I wanted to check the previous ones. The Poirot in the last one is totally wrong.

I've read a few Agatha Christie. But it was years ago. I enjoyed all that I read.

@LadyDuck How recent is the most recent one? I know I saw one decades ago and thought it was good.

We just finished listening to Where the Crawdads Sing. Oh my that lady can read and fine, fine though often sad poetic writing. Its a naturalist psychology tale, on the order of the movie Nell. I have ordered the print version from the library so that I can further savor it. Angela's Ashes was tons too close to home for me to read more than a paragraph or so.

Did you come from Irish poverty?

@TheHorse No I did not come from Irish poverty. My hubby and I did know poverty about as deep as the Great Depression when our daughter was growing.

I'm nearing the end of several books in the Joe Pickett series by C.J. Box. The books are about a Game Warden in Saddlesprings, WY named Joe Pickett. I am half way through Vicious Circle and waiting for The Disappeared. His newest will be out next March. He also wrote Shots Fired which is a Joe Pickett Game Warden too but a collection of ten small stories. I haven't read his other works yet but will be. He brings his books alive.

I haven't read anything by this author! What would be a good first read?

I found Angela's Ashes confronting and upsetting. You only need to read one or two like that in your lifetime and I'd already read A Fortunate Life by a man who grew up in much the area of WA as I did.

I liked his writing style, but I found the book repetitive after the first 150 pages or so.

@TheHorse Me either, I was tired of the same old same old authors, so I just picked up a book and said" you`re it, lets go!" I have did the random book thing several times this summer and I was never disappointed.

@TheHorse I like rereading a series when I've got them all, and in order.

@BarBaraPrz I never read in order. But I bet there are some Hillermans that I haven't read yet.

I haven't read that series. I do like rereading familiar books now and then, like John Fowles's The Magus. They become a part of me.

I am going to read a YA novel called Born Scared by Kevin Brooks. Then I've got a few more YA books and a non-fiction book to read. I love YA books even though I am 35. And I think I will be a fan of YA books even when I am old.

@TheHorse I just find them interesting and really enjoy them. And in some way I can also relate at times. If that's a good enough answer.
