That Insomnia Thing

I am up. I woke up at 1:50 or so. I stayed in bed an hour, then got up. It may be that my tummy is hungry, who knows? So, this time I am trying a remedy of instant hot chocolate, sprinkled with a little nutmeg. Nutmeg is supposed to relax you. Now to figure something to turn off my brain. When my warm drink is gone I will try going back to sleep. Any other insomnia sufferers? Any solutions?

I took ages to get to sleep last night then woke at 3am and couldn't go back to sleep. It is very annoying. I don't have any magic answers.

You are excited about the concert, perhaps? I seem to do this in the night before my husband has another appointment.

@GardenGerty It could be but probably a bit more worried than excited. There seems to be a lot to do at the finish this time. Sometimes you can't do much ahead of time although we've done what we can.

@gardengerty Oh yes, I'm one. I get over to sleep then waken full of life and wakefulness and prowl about the house too tired to do anything constructive but not able to get back to sleep. This is one of the reasons I detest hotels - once I'm locked in my room there is nowhere to prowl about without wakening my wife. I know I should start to wind down for bed a lot earlier than I do - no coffee, no TV, no internet, basically no fun, but I can't do that. Let me know when you find the antidote to sleeplessness that doesn't involve medication.

Ooh, yeah, a hotel would be a problem. It is a bit of a problem when we are at my brother's house as well. I cannot turn on the light in the bedroom and I am afraid of waking people.

It is awful to be wide awake in a hotel or even when staying with friends. You don't feel you can get up and you just lie there for ages.

My problem is getting sleepy as early as 10 in the evening because I have to wake up at 5:00 in the morning. I always would go to sleep about 11;00 so it's only 6 hours of sleep with me . I feel sleepy at the office so I take a nap of 15 minutes during lunch break.

I find that I do get sleepy earlier now than I used to. I can identify with the short nap at lunch if you have a suitable place.

I don't get insomnia that often, but when I do it is always at the most inopportune times. Unfortunately, I don't have any remedies for insomnia. I tend to read when I can't sleep, and usually that eventually puts me to sleep. Usually. And I never knew nutmeg is a relaxer. I put nutmeg in my coffee every morning. Maybe that's why I'm so calm at work every day! haha

I just read that about nutmeg in an article about various healthy teas. My mom used to eat a little nutmeg if she had a sick stomach. Your co workers may find you to be really mellow. Herbs and spices are very healthy for you, usually.

@GardenGerty I will make sure to increase my use of nutmeg then! I'm a big fan of herbs and spices, so I'm always adding things on to my foods to improve the tasted. I never thought I could also be improving my health as well!

@moffittjc You will be doing yourself big favors trying all kinds of herbs and spices. For sharp mental abilities, rosemary is good.

One thing that helps me sleep is working on a book until I'm ready to fall asleep on the computer. If I'm already in bed, and can't sleep, I'll work on a book and that puts me right to sleep.

Insomnia is annoying, that is for sure. I don't get it very often but when I do, I pray to the God of all comfort. That always helps. That and maybe a shot or two of a good brandy.

Be careful what you eat late or when you wake up. Good snacks are: walnuts, almonds, cheese, cherries, pretzels, tuna, white rice, and cereal, Good luck!

I would skip the white rice, cereal and pretzels. I like dairy products, so the milk on the cereal would be helpful.

Reading works for me especially if I can read in bed and also taking powdered Magnesium in a warm drink really helps or even capsules. Hot milk is another go to. After that I just repeat everything---lol!

I have magnesium in my evening med box. It does help. Most of the time. I do snack on dairy products sometimes. Warm milk should help.

I used to have trouble falling asleep because I couldn't turn my thoughts off. I resolved that problem by reading before trying to go to sleep - but now I am waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble falling back asleep. Grrr. Haven't solved that one yet. Good luck with your insomnia!
